    Thornton W. BURGESS (1874 - 1965)

    MP3 CD (IDB Productions, Jan. 1, 2016)
This novel by Thornton W. Burgess revolves around one of the most energetic and most complex characters in the Green Meadow, Peter Cottontail, also known as Peter Rabbit. He is smart and mischievous, loved by most of the other characters and always looking for adventures, like only the best rabbits can.At the beginning of the story, the rabbit doesn’t even have a name – well, he does have one, but it is one that is way too common for his colorful character – so his first quest is for a name. When that quest is accomplished, he starts pursuing others, such as outsmarting the smartest animal in the Meadow, Reddy Fox. Readers who are already familiar with Burgess’ fables will be happy to meet characters known from other stories such as Unc’ Billy Possum, Jerry Muskrat or Ol’ Mistah Buzzard, some of whom befriend the little rabbit, some of whom dislike him, but all of whom accompany him in his exploits. The story is full of unexpected turns, Peter is never afraid to jump headfirst into life, making good decisions sometimes, bad decisions on other occasions (for example when he tries to hibernate like other creatures in the forest do).Like all the other fables by Burgess, The Adventures of Peter Cottontail is also much more than a funny and well-written story for children. It is also an educative story that comes with a gently formulated moral conclusion: the little rabbit becomes content when he finds out what his true nature is, whenever he tries to mimic someone else, he remains restless to do something else. Children of all ages will enjoy the great story of the long-whiskered little rodent and the book will surely provide food for thought and inspire great conversations about the conclusion and about the natural world.

    Thornton Burgess

    (, April 28, 2020)
Peter Rabbit, unhappy at his plain-sounding name, briefly changed his name to Peter Cottontail because he felt it made him sound more important. He began putting on airs to live up to his important-sounding name, but after much teasing from his friends, soon returned to his original name, because, as he put it, "There's nothing like the old name after all."

The Adventures of Peter Cottontail I. PETER RABBIT DECIDES TO CHANGE HIS NAME PETER RABBIT! Peter Rabbit! I don't see what Mother Nature ever gave me such a common sounding name as that for. People laugh at me, but if I had a fine sounding name they wouldn't laugh. Some folks say that a name doesn't amount to anything, but it does. If I should do some wonderful thing, nobody would think anything of it. No, Sir, nobody would think anything of it at all just because--why just because it was done by Peter Rabbit." Peter was talking out loud, but he was talking to himself. He sat in the dear Old Briar-patch with an ugly scowl on his usually happy face. The sun was shining, the Merry Little Breezes of Old Mother West Wind were dancing over the Green Meadows, the birds were singing, and happiness, the glad, joyous happiness of springtime, was everywhere but in Peter Rabbit's heart. There there seeded to be no room for anything but discontent. And such foolish discontent--discontent with his name! And yet, do you know, there are lots of people just as foolish as Peter Rabbit. "Well, what are you going to do about it?" The voice made Peter Rabbit jump and turn around hastily. There was Jimmy Skunk poking his head in at the opening of one of Peter's private little paths. He was grinning, and Peter knew by that grin that Jimmy had heard what he had said. Peter didn't know what to say. He hung his head in a very shame-faced way.

In The Adventures of Peter Cottontail, Peter Rabbit doesn't like his name and tries to find another that has more prestige. His friends think he is silly and devise a scheme to show Peter the problem with changing his name. Peter learns his mistake and changes his name back. As with all Thornton W. Burgess stories, The Adventures of Peter Cottontail promotes positive virtues to young children, focusing on mischief and trickery. Burgess was a conservationist and author of children's stories. He loved the beauty of nature and its living creatures so much that he wrote about them for 50 years. By the time he retired, he had written over 170 books and 15,000 stories for a daily newspaper column.
