  • The Squirrel King

    Matthew Thibeault, Mary Barrows

eBook (Lum Publishing, May 30, 2016)
Did you ever wonder what dogs talk about to each other when we're not around? Well, for the most part they talk about things that their humans talk about. They discuss the weather and the state of the family and what they want for dinner, but most of all, they tell each other stories. All dogs love a good story and most of them are great story tellers as well. The Squirrel King is the first in a series of books that are the fairytales that older dogs tell to younger ones. These stories are passed down from one generation of dog to the next. They are told by mothers to their children and from one friend to another. In this first story, Abby has come to live with Molly and her human family. Abby is very young and Molly is much older, but not yet elderly. To get Abby to fall asleep one night, Molly begins to tell her the story of how the very first dogs met the very first squirrels. This is the story of The Squirrel King: Prince Ethan and Princess Sophia were just out playing one morning when they ran into a strange small creature sitting up in a tree. Prince Stephen was just out searching for a gift for his father when he looked down from his perch high in an ancient oak and saw the two giant animals below him. A sneeze and a falling acorn then sets off a chain of events that bring the Kingdom of Dogs and the Kingdom of Squirrels to the brink of war. The Squirrel King reminds us that no matter our differences, we are all very much the same, and that first impressions are not always correct ones. Come along on a learning adventure as two proud kingdoms try to put fear and misunderstanding aside and learn the truth about each other and themselves before time runs out.

The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin is a children's book written and illustrated by Beatrix Potter and first published in August 1903. The story is about an impertinent red squirrel named Nutkin and his narrow escape from an owl called Old Brown. The book followed Potter's hugely successful The Tale of Peter Rabbit, and was an instant hit. Squirrel Nutkin, his brother Twinkleberry, and their many cousins sail to Owl Island on little rafts they have constructed of twigs. They offer resident owl Old Brown a gift and ask his permission to do their nut-collecting on his island. Nutkin however dances about impertinently singing a silly riddle. Old Brown pays no attention to Nutkin, but permits the squirrels to go about their work. Every day for six days, the squirrels offer gifts to Old Brown, and every day as well, Nutkin taunts the owl with another sing-song riddle.

  • A Squirrel's Tale

    Richard Wyn Jones

Paperback (Maxwell Publishing, Jan. 13, 2015)
The forests of South West Scotland are home to the last major colony of red squirrels in Britain. As long as time itself, a natural order has governed this peaceful squirrel population. It is their steadfast belief that “The Lord of the Sky,” the Maker of all things, watches over them, and their reverent understanding that nature’s way is his will. To most squirrels, their world operates in a basically benign fashion. It can be fierce, competitive, even hazardous, at times, but this occurs only out of necessity and represents an essential condition of existence. Rusty, a loner and orphaned juvenile red squirrel however is not content. Deep down, he feels that the Lord of the Sky has ordained a special purpose for him. In his vivid dreams, he constantly challenges the Lord of the Sky to reveal his calling. Many squirrels view him as strange and eccentric, so he spends much of his time away from the Clan. One spring morning the diminutive Rusty is exploring the farthest part of the forest where a small group of Reds have recently settled. Undetected, he witnesses their brutal murder by a bloodthirsty band of grey squirrels. Abaddon, their ferocious leader has brought his hordes of Greys North, his aim, to kill all red squirrels once and for all. Rusty must warn the main Clan. Outnumbered they will have to overcome all odds and fight for the very survival of their species.
