Marcus is teenager in the future with power to absorb other people's memory. The problem with his 'gift' is that it is involuntary and knowing everyone's history and intimate details before they meet has destroyed his ability to make meaningful connections. He lies about his age to escape on a freighter out into the stars but his problems come along. It's only when he runs into an alien race he cannot read that he thinks he's found his place. But is it really what he's looking for? And will he be able to tell before it's too late?Written in 2003 by myself at the age of 17. Originally published in JupiterSF magazine in 2004. I have changed nothing from how it was first printed, issues and all. This is a story I one day hope to revisit and turn into a novella/novel. The more interest the ideas in it garners now, the sooner I may get to it.
