She was born Augusta Curtiss Huiell in New York City, the daughter of the bookkeeper John Valentine Huiell and his third wife, Anna Curtiss. She completed her studies from Normal College, now Hunter College, in New York City and was a teacher in elementary school. After her marriage with Robert Seaman, she got the time to write children's fictions. She has only one child, Helen Roberta or Bobbie.
