The fairy tale The Emperor’s New Clothes by Hans Christian Andersen tells about two cunning fellows who managed to deceive their emperor. They made him clothes and assured him that it will be invisible only for silly people! The emperor could not see the clothes, but was ashamed to admit it. Only one little boy was not ashamed to say and he revealed the truth with a well-known phrase: “But he isn’t wearing anything at all!”

Sometimes people are willingly dishonest rather than risking embarrassment. Such is the case in this whimsical rendition of Hans Christian Andersens classic tale. Excessive fondness for elaborate and expensive clothing allows a pair of dodgy tailors to hoodwink the emperor. Weaving a grandiose tale instead of actual clothing, the tailors tell the emperor that their exquisite garments, woven with the finest of materials, are invisible to less worthy individuals. Reluctant to admit possible imperfections, no one in the town is willing to be honest, with the exception of one small boy. The conclusion of this tale extends beyond that of the original, shedding light on the benefits that come from always telling the truth.

"The Emperor's New Clothes” is a short tale by Hans Christian Andersen which in this in this delightful adaptation is brought up to date by Anthony James. It is a story of vanity and power tells the story of two weavers who promise the Emperor a new suit of clothes that is so special that it is invisible to those who are simple or stupid, but of course it isn’t. So none of the Emperor’s advisors wanted to admit that they were simple or stupid so they don’t tell him the truth. The Emperor then wore his new suit in a parade, all the citizens cheered him as they don’t want to be seen as simple or stupid. However, a little girl who didn’t know the story cried "He isn't wearing anything at all!" Then of course everyone else started saying it and the Emperor suddenly realised that he had been very stupid and put in a system that meant in future he didn’t make a fool of himself.

In a faraway kingdom, there lives an Emperor who prizes fancy clothes above all else. He buys suit after suit made of the most expensive materials instead of tending to his threadbare kingdom. Then, one day, two traveling merchants offer to make the Emperor a special suit that has magical powers. The merchants, however, are not who they claim to be, and the suit has one major flaw no one can see it!

The emperor can never find the perfect outfit until he meets the Rogue brothers, who can make clothes so special that only the coolest people are able to see them. But what happens when no one in the emperor’s court can see the clothes-and the emperor can’t either? Is no one cool enough or perhaps...there are no clothes to see? This funny, clever adaptation of the classic Hans Christian Anderson tale is captured by Lee Harper in watercolor and pencil.
