Thirteen-year-old Bud Thompson couldn't care less about being popular. Instead, he loves to dream up cool inventions like those of his heroes-Edison, Tesla, Ford, and his workaholic father. After Bud becomes the youngest Space Center intern ever, he learns that he and his sister Sara will be traveling with their father on an exciting assignment to explore life-forms below the ice sheet in the Antarctica. Bud is more than ready for an adventure. After arriving in the frozen tundra, Bud befriends Peter Roberts, a wheelchair-bound computer whiz who shares the same interests and is the same age as Bud. The boys discover a way to participate in the expedition's scientific research, and it is not long before they are privy to the major discovery of intelligent life that exists below sea level. But when an expedition explorer is unexpectedly attacked during the first manned exploration mission to the ancient lake, Bud and Peter suddenly realize that their newfound knowledge has just put them in grave danger. Now it is up to the two young inventors to not only save themselves, but also the expedition-before it is too late.
