  • Five Ugly Monsters Book and Audiocassette Tape Set

    Tedd Arnold, Rick Adamson

Accessory (Scholastic Book Clubs Softcover Book and Audiocassette Tape, March 15, 1998)
Twisting the words of the old "Five Little Monkeys" song, this picture book concerns a little boy who's trying to get to sleep. Soon five rather cuddly looking, bug-eyed monsters troop in and boot him out of his bed, which they use as a trampoline. When one falls off and bumps his head, the boy calls the doctor, who yells through the phone: "No more monsters jumping on the bed!" Cowed, the little monsters trundle off, but just as the boy is getting to sleep, four new monsters barge in looking for fun, then three, then two, and finally, one. Taking charge, the boy dispatches them all. Lively cartoon drawings, colorful washes, and many comic touches make this bright, sassy picture book a natural for story time. Great fun, though probably better as a wake-up book than a bedtime story.
  • Make a Wish, Honey Bear! Book and Audiocassette Tape Set

    Marcus Pfister, Corinne Orr

Accessory (Scholastic Book Clubs Softcover Book and Audiocassette Tape, March 15, 2000)
Honey Bear sits despondently on a rock, wondering if everyone except his mother has forgotten his birthday. "Surprise!" shouts his furry extended family and best friend as Mother brings out a birthday cake garnished with leaves and berries. As the young bear wonders what to wish for, each member of the party makes a suggestion in which they have a vested interest (e.g., his sister tells him, "Wish for lots of time to play. Especially with me"; his father advocates a wish "for a big salmon the next time we go fishing"). In a limited palette of greens, browns and grays, Pfister depicts each of these would-be wishes coming true. Finally, Honey Bear makes his own wish "that all his birthdays could be as happy as this one!"
  • An Ant's Day Off Book and Audiocassette Tape Set

Bonny Becker, Nina Laden, Joey Mazzarino

Accessory (Scholastic Book Clubs Softcover Book and Audiocassette Tape, March 15, 2006)
Bart the sand ant has spent his whole life moving mounds of sand from one tunnel to another in an underground nest. He and the other ants have never seen the sky or felt the rain. One day, Bart feels the outside world beckoning him, and he flees the nest without being noticed. He quickly finds out that the world is full of wonder and joy, and of danger, as he narrowly escapes becoming lunch for a frog and almost drowns in a rain puddle. Bart begins to regret his escapade and heads home. The entrance guard questions him but then reassures him that "sometimes an ant just needs to look at the sky" and looks the other way as Bart gets back to work. After listening all summer to his tales of the sun, rain, and bees, fellow sand ant Floyd decides to go exploring and Bart joins him. The richly colored illustrations of the outside world contrast sharply with the browns and tans of the nest. Deep green grass and bright yellow flowers are seen from an ant's perspective. The insects are dressed as people, complete with hard hats and safety glasses. The message -- that it's good to take time for oneself -- is not subtle or indirect. Bonny Becker has written the perfect story for our hectic, over-scheduled lives. Nina Laden's illustrations bring the bustling insect world to life with humor and verve.

  • Rain Drop Splash Book and Audiocassette Tape Set

Alvin Tresselt, Leonard Weisgard, Mary Bowman

Audio Cassette (Scholastic Book Clubs Softcover Book and Audiocassette Tape, March 15, 1995)
"Drip drop splash went the rain all day." The rain formed a puddle. . .and became a pond. . .and spilled over into a lake. . .and grew larger and larger until it joined with a river and travelled out to sea. With this classic picture book, young readers can follow the course of a heavy rain as it drenches people and animals and changes the landscape below. With its poetic text and lovely, detailed illustrations, Rain Drop Splash is a delight to read, rain or shine.
  • The Principal's New Clothes Book and Audiocassette Tape Set

Stephanie Calmenson, Denise Brunkus, Larry Robinson

Audio Cassette (Scholastic Book Clubs Softcover Book and Audiocassette Tape, March 15, 1991)
"Mr. Bundy is the principal of P.S. 88. He is also the sharpest dresser in town." So begins this marvelous update of Andersen's The Emperor's New Clothes. The deliciously evil Moe and Ivy approach Mr. Bundy about a new suit made of cloth invisible to those who are stupid or unfit for their jobs. Lie upon lie builds up because no one (including Mr. Bundy) dares to admit to not seeing the fabric. On the day Mr. Bundy plans to show off his new duds, he arrives at school in his very chic underwear. A kindergartner finally calls out the truth, much to everybody's relief. Mr. Bundy is inundated with clothes to wear and, even in his hodge-podge of garments, he still looks sharp. Calmenson's rendition of this beloved tale of self-aggrandizement is particularly fun because of its contemporary setting. The ending is a kinder one since the principal joins in the fun of his predicament. In her appealing watercolors, Brunkus gives the bad guys wicked eyebrows and nearly everyone wears outrageous clothing. A lighthearted poke at authority and vanity.

  • Gregory's Shadow Book and Audiocassette Tape Set

    Don Freeman, Steve Blane

Accessory (Scholastic Book Clubs Softcover Book and Audiocassette Tape, Jan. 1, 2002)
Gregory Groundhog always feels braver when his best pal, his shadow, accompanies him. On the day before Groundhog Day, Gregory suggests that he and Shadow go find something to eat. "Sure... I'm right behind you," quips his amorphous companion, whom Gregory inadvertently leaves outdoors when he returns to his burrow. After the two are reunited, the groundhog faces another dilemma: He doesn't want to be separated from his friend again, yet he knows that his appearance with his shadow on the following morning will make the local farmers unhappy, since this augurs six more weeks of winter. Not surprisingly, Gregory devises a simple solution to this quandary that pleases all involved. Less engaging than Freeman's light yet satisfying narrative are his wispy, sketchy picturesAa number of which seem unfinished. Still, the whimsical notion of a groundhog's all-important shadow taking on a life of its own will pique readers' imaginations, and the antics of these two earnest buddies will bring smiles to young faces.

  • Hedgie's Surprise Book and Audiocassette Tape Set

Jan Brett, Bill Quinn, Megan Blane, Larry Robinson

Audio Cassette (Scholastic Book Clubs Softcover Book and Audiocassette Tape, March 15, 2001)
Brett's trademark, elaborately bordered paintings are once again the centerpiece of her latest tale set in timeless rural Scandinavia. And, as in her prior works, the author's endearingly expressive animal characters, depicted in meticulous detail, steal the show. After viewing Goosey-Goosey's brood of chicks, Henny the hen longs for her very own offspring. But each morning a greedy, elf-like "Tomten" steals her newly laid egg, insisting he needs "a little yummy for my hungry, hungry tummy." Henny awakens her friend, Hedgie the hedgehog, with a loud wail, "No eggs, no chicks, no peeping babies," and he offers to help Henny put a stop to the Tomten's thievery. On successive days, her pal plants in Henny's nest an acorn, a strawberry, a mushroom, a potato and, in the ultimate deceit, hides himself in the straw, rolled into a ball, which sends the rogue running after he picks up the prickly fellow. Thanks to Hedgie's cleverness, five eggs hatch into fluffy chicks, fulfilling Henny's wish for a family of her own. Youngsters will be happily diverted by the busy goings-on in both Brett's mainframe illustrations and elegant borders, which feature a red-and-white needlepoint background and egg-shaped spot art that tactically foreshadows the narrative.
