  • The New Day In And Day Out - The Alice and Jerry Basic Readers

Mabel O'Donnell, Florence J. Hoopes, Margaret C. Hoopes

Hardcover (Row, Peterson & Company, March 15, 1953)
Alice and Jerry was a basal reader series dating from the mid-1930s to the 1960s. (Basal readers are textbooks used to teach reading and associated skills to schoolchildren. Commonly called "reading books" or "readers" they are usually published as anthologies that combine previously published short stories, excerpts of longer narratives, and original works. A standard basal series comes with individual identical books for students, a Teacher's Edition of the book, and a collection of workbooks, assessments, and activities. A sequence of readers of increasing difficulty are called graded readers.) The Alice and Jerry books taught children to read through interesting stories about American children in authentic, historic settings. Each chapter in the book continues the story from previous chapters. The books follow a group of children through a year (or thereabouts) of their life. This edition is broken into six sections: 'Alice and Jerry', 'Surprise', 'Animals', 'Betsy Lee', 'Mr. Carl and Jack', and 'Good Night'. Each section has four stories each, except for the 1st section which has seven and the last section which has two. Every page is wonderfully illustrated by Florence J. & Margaret C. Hoopes.
