Chronicles of Avonlea is a collection of short stories by L. M. Montgomery, related to the Anne of Green Gables series. It features an abundance of stories relating to the fictional Canadian village of Avonlea, and was first published in 1912. Sometimes marketed as a book in the Anne Shirley series, Anne plays only a minor role in the book: out of the 12 stories in the collection, she stars in only one ("The Hurrying of Ludovic"), and has a small supporting role in another ("The Courting of Prissy Strong"). She is otherwise only briefly mentioned in passing in five other stories: "Each in His Own Tongue", '"Little Joscelyn"', "The Winning of Lucinda", '"Quarantine at Alexander Abraham's" and "The End of a Quarrel".

Other Avonlea residents from the Anne series are also referenced in passing, including Marilla Cuthbert and Mrs. Rachel Lynde. The Penhallows from "The Winning of Lucinda" would be mentioned later in Anne of the Island. As well, there are brief appearances made by Diana Barry, the Reverend Mr. Allan, and his wife. The majority of stories, though, are about residents of Avonlea (and surrounding towns) who are never mentioned in the Anne novels. One reason for this is that most of the short stories in this volume were written and published by Montgomery in various magazines before Anne of Green Gables was even conceived. With the great success of Anne of Green Gables in 1908 and the sequel Anne of Avonlea in 1909, Montgomery was under pressure from her publisher to deliver more stories about Anne. Accordingly, she reworked the settings of several previously published non-Avonlea stories to incorporate references to Avonlea, as well as inserting several references to Anne Shirley and some of the town's other characters. The whole was then marketed as a new companion book to the Anne series.

Chronicles of Avonlea is a collection of short stories by Lucy Maud Montgomery relating to Montgomery’s most well-known and probably her most beloved character: strong-willed and sensitive Anne Shirley from the small (and fictional) Canadian village called Avonlea. If you are familiar with Anne Shirley stories, you will be familiar with most characters in these stories – most of them make at least a brief reference to Anne, but they focus on the lives of others in the village. The collection includes 12 stories about Anne’s neighbors, offered to the reader in Montgomery’s signature style, made easy to read, highly entertaining for all ages and very educative, too. The topics that the stories revolve around are everyday events that become central in the life of the characters: in The Winning of Lucinda, long feuding neighbors kiss and make up; in Aunt Olivia’s Beau, there is courtship and shy love; in The Miracle at Carmody, the reader sees two ladies trying to raise a child, to mention just a few of the topics. Chronicles of Avonlea was first published in 1912 and it was a huge success. It was followed in 1920 by a sequel entitled Further Chronicles of Avonlea, a similarly great success. Though the two collections are the only books that do not feature Anne Shirley as their protagonist, Montgomery was such an excellent master of character and storytelling that she could create perfect stories around any character. The stories are all sweet, the language that Montgomery uses is full of beautiful and often unusual metaphors and similes, and even though each story comes with a teaching, each comes with lots of hilarious happenings, too. This makes Chronicles of Avonlea just as entertaining as the other, more famous stories by Lucy Maud Montgomery and just as suitable for readers of any age.

Listeners will be thrilled to know that Anne Shirley does appear in these wonderful stories of Avonlea and Spencervale. In fact, page one starts off with Anne curled up on the window seat of Theodora Dix's sitting-room, where Anne spent a fortnight of her vacation. However, most of the people who appear in this book are new to listeners of the Anne books. There are Ludovic and Theodora, Felix Moore and his grandfather, Little Joscelyn and Aunty Nan, Old Man Shaw's Blossom, and many others, all delightfully drawn with Lucy Montgomery's unique talent of insightful description. All the charm of Anne of Green Gables and Anne of Avonlea can be found in this gently sentimental and humorous book.
