  • The Queen's Necklace

    Alexandre Dumas

    (Ktoczyta.pl, May 6, 2019)
French author of famous swashbuckler novels Alexandre Dumas again chooses 18th century France for his milieu. No musketeers in this one, for it is the Queen, Marie Antoinette, who needs defending. Set a few years before the deluge of the French Revolution this plot is convoluted beyond belief; schemes, counter-measures, vicious personal agendas, love-struck young people, royal revenge and ecclesiastical machinations – all are present. Fans of historical fiction will love "The Queen's Necklace" Dumas' gripping retelling of the Affair of the Necklace a suspicious incident of theft in the court of Louis XVI. This episode further spoiled the already-tarnished reputation of the Queen. Although seeming to present an idealized picture of Marie Antoinette, it also illustrates the decay and impending decline of the contemporary nobility. Some experts say set into motion a chain of events that resulted in the eventual downfall of the monarchy.

Paperback (Alexandre Dumas, April 28, 2017)
The winter of 1784, that monster which devoured half France, we could not see, although he growled at the doors, while at the house of M. de Richelieu, shut in as we were in that warm and comfortable dining-room. A little frost on the windows seems but the luxury of nature added to that of man. Winter has its diamonds, its powder, and its silvery embroidery for the rich man wrapped in his furs, and packed in his carriage, or snug among the wadding and velvet of a well-warmed room. Hoar-frost is a beauty, ice a change of decoration by the greatest of artists, which the rich admire through their windows. He who is warm can admire the withered trees, and find a somber charm in the sight of the snow-covered plain. He who, after a day without suffering, when millions of his fellow-creatures are enduring dreadful privations, throws himself on his bed of down, between his fine and well-aired sheets, may find out that all is for the best in this best of all possible worlds. But he who is hungry sees none of these beauties of nature; he who is cold hates the sky without a sun, and consequently without a smile for such unfortunates. Now, at the time at which we write, that is, about the middle of the month of April, three hundred thousand miserable beings, dying from cold and hunger, groaned in Paris alone-in that Paris where, in spite of the boast that scarcely another city contained so many rich people, nothing had been prepared to prevent the poor from perishing of cold and wretchedness.

  • The Queen's Necklace

    Alexandre Dumas

    (Independently published, Jan. 24, 2020)
The Queen's Necklace (French: Le Collier de la Reine), was written by French novelist, and playwright Alexandre Dumas. Originally published in French between 1849-50, and in English in 1894 by The Federal Book Company of New York. The work is a novel that is based on the Affair of the Diamond Necklace, an incident of fraud, where the wife of King Louis XVI of France, Marie Antoinette, was alleged to have participated in a crime to defraud the crown jewelers of an expensive diamond necklace. The queen, already tarnished by court rumour and gossip, had her reputation, and subsequently the reputation of the French monarchy ruined by this particular incident, that became a turning point as the nation lurched forward towards revolution.
  • The Queen's Necklace, Vol. 1 of 2

    Alexandre Dumas

    (Forgotten Books, April 22, 2018)
Excerpt from The Queen's Necklace, Vol. 1 of 2 His connection with the affair of the necklace is rather problematical, except in so far as he was the confidant and mystical adviser of the Cardinal, whose hopes, founded upon his supposed correspondence with the queen, he undoubtedly nursed with his predictions of great power and influence to come by means of it. The early history of Jeanne de saint-remy, by courtesy Countess, styled also of Valois, is told by Dumas with substantial accuracy, and need not be repeated here. She married Monsieur de La Motte, a private in the Gendarmes, at bar-sur-aube, and dubbed him Count, by virtue of her own Countess-ship.
