    (, March 17, 2019)
The Two Gentlemen of Verona is a comedy by William Shakespeare from early in his career. It has the smallest cast of any of Shakespeare's plays, and is the first of his plays in which a heroine dresses as a boy. It deals with the themes of friendship and infidelity. The highlight of the play is considered by some to be Launce, the clownish servant of Proteus, and his dog Crab, to whom "the most scene-stealing non-speaking role in the canon" has been attributed.

It is considered by some to be Shakespeare's first play, and is often seen as showing his first tentative steps in laying out some of the themes and motifs with which he would later deal in more detail; for example, it is the first of his plays in which a heroine dresses as a boy. The play deals with the themes of friendship and infidelity, the conflict between friendship and love, and the foolish behaviour of people in love. The highlight of the play is considered by some to be Launce, the clownish servant of Proteus, and his dog Crab, to whom "the most scene-stealing non-speaking role in the canon" has been attributed. As the play begins, Valentine is preparing to leave Verona for Milan so as to broaden his horizons. He begs his best friend, Proteus, to come with him, but Proteus is in love with Julia, and refuses to leave. Disappointed, Valentine bids Proteus farewell and goes on alone. Meanwhile, Julia is discussing Proteus with her maid, Lucetta, who tells Julia that she thinks Proteus is fond of her. Julia, however, acts coyly, embarrassed to admit that she likes him. Lucetta then produces a letter; she will not say who gave it to her, but teases Julia that it was Valentine's servant, Speed, who brought it from Proteus. Julia, still unwilling to reveal her love in front of Lucetta, angrily tears up the letter. She sends Lucetta away, but then, realising her own rashness, she picks up the fragments of the letter and kisses them, trying to piece them back together.

Hardcover (Forgotten Books, Jan. 3, 2018)
Love. Friendship. Betrayal. Those are the themes of The Two Gentlemen of Verona, one of Shakespeare's earliest comedies. Critics tend to portray the play as a workshop effort that laid the groundwork for his later, more mature plays like As You Like It and Twelfth Night. The play is definitely a forerunner to those more sophisticated works, yet The Two Gentlemen of Verona stands on its own merit. The Two Gentlemen of Verona follows young Valentine and his best friend Proteus, as they take off on adventures beyond their home. The two come to conflict over the affections of beautiful Silvia, who happens to be betrothed to another guy. The two men jockey for position, forgetting their personal histories and prior loves. One of them commits a stunning betrayal, setting the stage for lessons about the nature of true friendship and true love. The Two Gentlemen of Verona may at times seem farcical, but it certainly is in keeping with the preoccupations of the then-young Bard. It will resonate with young people as well as those who remember how difficult it is to come of age with one's sanity intact. The Two Gentlemen of Verona echoes future Shakespearean developments, and one can find hints of characters to come, such as Twelfth Night's Viola. It is easy to see how the play could work on stage. Surprisingly there is even a role for a patient dog (named Crab). The Two Gentlemen of Verona is a true comedy that is not meant to be taken seriously. The invocation of both courtly love and romantic love adds emotional significance to the play. This edition gives a good introduction with plenty of notes about the proper stage direction. Readers who want something light but not frivolous will really enjoy the early Shakespeare.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Two Gentlemen of VeronaDate of the Play. Though the earliest mention we have Of The Two Gentlemen of Verona is that in Mere's list Of 1598, it was evidently written much earlier, pro bably about 1591. The exact date, however, is Of little importance, since construction, thought, language, and character Of metre alike point to its being one Of Shakespeare's earliest efforts.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. William Shakespeare

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, Sept. 10, 2014)
William Shakespeare is widely considered the greatest writer in the history of the English language, so renowned and respected that the time period in which he lived is often known as the Age of Shakespeare. Indeed, his genius is questioned only by those who doubt the authenticity of his authorship of timeless classics like Romeo and Juliet. As Ben Jonson once put it, "He was not of an age, but for all time.” No other writer, in English or in any other language, can rival the appeal that Shakespeare has enjoyed around the world, and nobody’s had a bigger influence.
