    MP3 CD (IDB Productions, Jan. 1, 2016)
A plot woven around charming characters in a sweet and magical style and a book that was just as popular when it came out as it is today, The Princess Aline is a love story with lots of unexpected twists and turns. In short, the story is about a young man, an artist who tries to meet a princess, hoping that they will fall in love with each other. He finds the princess indeed and he falls in love, too, but not with the princess – her companion seems to be a better match for the young man. Written and published in 1895, The Princess Aline is by no means the tedious, slow-moving story one would expect of a love story written at the end of the 19th century. The events come one after the other and the reader is also witness to a substantial amount of character development. The young artist first looking for a way to conquer the princess practically grows up in front of the reader’s very eyes and learns that he must look for more than a pretty face if he wants to find real love. Richard Harding Davis was one of the last true Renaissance men. He was a successful playwright, a novelist, a journalist and he was also a successful businessman. He was a war correspondent in the Boer War as well as in World War I. He lived a very active life and he also travelled widely, England, France, Africa, South America, Greece, Russia and Spain being just a few of the places he went to and wrote about. The Princess Aline is certainly a love story, but it is also one written by someone used to writing in concise, straight-to-the-point style – perhaps it is the combination of romance and common sense that makes this novella so entertaining and so popular among young and more mature modern readers alike.

He was within two feet of the girl who had been called "Aline." She raised her head to speak, and saw Carlton staring open-eyed at her. She glanced at him for an instant, as if to assure herself that she did not know him, and then, turning to her brother, smiled in the same tolerant, amused way in which she had so often smiled upon Carlton from the picture.
