Paperback (Forgotten Books, June 10, 2012)
In this edition of the play of King Lear my first object has been to give a text as good as possible. At the foot of each page I have endeavoured to show how the early editions of the play, on which a text must be formed, differ from each other, and when the old text has to be changed, to record such change, with the name of the editor who first introduced it, and the suggester of it (if any). Though the work of collating the early editions has been already admirably done, in 1866 by Mr. W. G. Clark and Mr. W. A ldis-W right in the Cambridge Shakespeare and afterwards by Mr. H. H. Fumess in his edition of King Leary the fifth volume of his Variorum Shakespeare (18 80), I thought it best to carefully collate the first edition of the play. Quarto i (the Pide Bull edition), 1608, with the second edition. Quarto 2(the N. Butter edition), 1608, and again to collate each of these editions of the play independently, with its text in the first edition of the works of Shakespeare (the first Folio, 1623), where it was for the third time printed. I have also recorded all but the minutest differences in the texts of some differing copies of Quarto i, and a few readings in the Quarto of It stands between Hanilet andO thello: the last page of Hamlet is 282 (misprinted 280); the first page ofO thello is 310, and is printed on the back of the last page of Lear, The page-numbers run from 283 to 309 (308 is misprinted 38).(Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.)About the Publisher Forgotten Books is a publisher of historical writings, such as: Philosophy, Classics, Science, Religion, History, Folklore and Mythology.Forgotten Books' Classic Reprint Series utilizes the latest technology to regenerate facsimiles of historically important writings. The Tragedy of King Lear depicts the descent of the title character into madness after retiring from power and disposing of his kingdom. Father to three daughters, he promises the larger share to the one who loves him most. Two of his daughters, Goneril and Regan, flatter him with superficial affection and respect and are awarded accordingly. Cordelia, his favorite, tells him there is nothing to which her love can be compared, that there are no words to express it. Lear misunderstands and, infuriated, disinherits her, the first of numerous blunders which lead to tragic endings. Lear travels to Goneril’s realm to reside with a retinue of 100 knights where they are treated shabbily. When Goneril diminishes his retinue, Lear leaves in a huff for Regan’s, where he is similarly treated, whereupon Lear succumbs to his rage and rushes out to rant on the heath in a storm. In the meantime, Edmund, illegitimate son of the Earl of Gloucester, plots to dispose first of his older brother and conspires with first Regan, then Goneril, to eliminate all claimants to the throne in one way or another. No one survives.

  • The Tragedy of King Lear

    William Shakespeare

Hardcover (Forgotten Books, Feb. 4, 2018)
Excerpt from The Tragedy of King LearThe text of this edition of King [ear is based upon a collation of the First and the Second Quartos, the seven teenth century Folios, the Globe edition, the Cambridge (w. Aldis Wright) edition of 1891, and that of Delius (188 As compared with the text of the earlier editions of Hud son's Shakespeare, it is conservative. Exclusive of changes in spelling, punctuation, and stage directions, very few emen dations by eighteenth and nineteenth century editors have been adopted; and these, with every variation from the First Folio, are indicated in the textual notes. These notes are printed immediately below the text, so that a reader or stu dent may see at a glance the evidence in the case of a dis puted reading, and have some definite understanding of the reasons for those differences in the text of Shakespeare which frequently surprise and very often annoy. Such an arrange ment should be of special help in the case of a play uni versally read and very often acted, as actors and interpreters seldom agree in adhering to one text. A consideration of the more poetical, or the more dramatically effective, of two variant readings will often lead to rich results in awakening a spirit of discriminating interpretation and in developing true creative criticism. In no sense is this a textual variorum edition. The variants given are only those of importance and high authority.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
