When a young couple who have only each other and a few other belongings decide to buy each other a special present as a surprise for Christmas, little do they know that the sacrifices they are willing to make for the gifts will basically void the value of the new presents. The Gift of the Magi is a heartwarming story written by O. Henry that touches upon the true meaning of Christmas and the love and compassion that it stands for.The story begins by introducing us to the couple and showing how they are able to remain so happy with each other despite living in utter poverty. Practically, their only valuable possessions include the wife's beautiful hair and the husband's pocket watch – a stunning heirloom that he values above anything else.As Christmas approaches, the two decide to each sell their most valued possessions in order to buy each other gifts that – ironically enough – are meant for complementing the valuable possessions they have. Although they are essentially left without any valuables in the end, they realize the true treasure is that they possess.Having become a true classic among stories written about the Spirit of Christmas, this beautiful tale exemplifies the love that the young married couple has for each other, while also featuring a magical ending that may surprise many readers, while also giving them a sense of what Christmas should truly be about, when it comes to its most essential meaning. You will likely be absolutely delighted reading this exceptional little tale about love, endurance and the willingness to improve on one's happiness. The Gift of the Magi shows us that Christmas can truly be the magical and enchanting holiday that it was meant to be, and the two lovers included in the story are the best example for that.
