  • Sonnets from the Portuguese: By Elizabeth Barrett Browning - Illustrated

    Elizabeth Barrett Browning

Paperback (Independently published, Aug. 3, 2017)
How is this book unique? Font adjustments & biography included Unabridged (100% Original content) Illustrated About Sonnets from the Portuguese by Elizabeth Barrett Browning Elizabeth Barrett Browning was a prolific writer and reviewer in the Victorian period, and in her lifetime, her reputation as a poet was at least as great as that of her husband, poet Robert Browning. Some of her poetry has been noted in recent years for strong feminist themes, but the poems for which Elizabeth Barrett Browning is undoubtedly best know are Sonnets from the Portuguese. Written for Robert Browning, who had affectionately nicknamed her his "little Portuguese," the sequence is a celebration of marriage, and of one of the most famous romances of the nineteenth century. Recognized for their Victorian tradition and discipline, these are some of the most passionate and memorable love poems in the English language. There are forty-four poems in the collection, including the very beautiful sonnet, "How do I love thee? Let me count the ways."

  • Sonnets from the Portuguese

    Elizabeth Barrett Browning

Paperback (Broken Column Press, Oct. 3, 2015)
Elizabeth Barrett wrote these sonnets as a set of lyrical love poems to Browning before their marriage, and the numbers designate the order in which they were written. This allows the discerning reader to examine the progression of a poet’s skills. These poems were heralded as the best sonnets since Shakespeare’s death. The collection was first published in 1850 and have become classics of English literature. The flawless execution of the 44 Petrarchan-style sonnets shows a dedication to excellence on the part of the author.

    Elizabeth Barrett Browning

Hardcover (Forgotten Books, April 19, 2018)
Excerpt from Sonnets From the PortugueseT was in the second or 1850 edition of the Poems in two volumes that the Sonnets from tba Portuguese were first given to the public. The circumstances attending their composition have never been clearly related. Mr. Browning, however, eight years before his death, made a statement to a friend, with the understanding that at some future date, after his own decease, the story might be more widely told. The time seems to have arrived when there can be no possible indis cretion in recording a very pretty episode of literary history.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
