  • Renascence and Other Poems - Illustrated by Lisa Shea

Edna St. Vincent Millay, Lisa Shea

Edna St. Vincent Millay was born in Rockport, Maine on February 22, 1892. When she was twelve, her mother divorced her father. The mother and three daughters then moved regularly, very poor, with one of their special pleasures being reading classic literature to each other. All three girls grew up quite bright, and Edna’s talent for poetry was known from a young age.In 1912, when Millay was only 20, she came in fourth in a poetry contest with her poem Renascence. Many felt she deserved first place for her entry. The name Renascence had been used by Walter Crane for his illustrated poetry book done in 1891. It might be that Millay knew of this book. The word refers to something which was once dormant becoming revived and alive.Edna went to Vassar and then moved to New York City. She loved the world of poetry there and became friends with a number of famous poets. During this period a number of publishers and magazines sought her out. By the time 1917 came around, she had put together her very first book of poetry. This was published by Mitchell Kennerley. It was titled, in a straightforward way, Renascence and Other Poems. She was 25 years old. The book has 25 poems in it. Kismet! In 1920, at age 28, she published A Few Figs from Thistles, famous for its celebration of female sexuality. Millay’s skills continued to build. She wrote The Ballad of the Harp-Weaver in 1923 and won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry with it. She was 31.In this same year she married Eugen Jan Boissevain who was a great supporter of her writing. In 1943 she was awarded the Frost Medal for her poetry. Her husband died in 1949 of lung cancer. Millay died the next year of a heart attack.Millay was well celebrated for her poetry during her lifetime and has earned even greater kudos in the decades since then.My name is Lisa Shea. I am a photographer and carefully selected images from my own photographic library to illustrate each of Millay's poems. I also take formatting extremely seriously. Please be aware that the text-dump 'public domain' version of this book available on Amazon (and elsewhere) has numerous formatting issues. That version should not be taken as an accurate version of what Millay wished to convey with her works.I hope you enjoy this poetry as much as I do. I’d love to hear your thoughts!

  • Renascence, and Other Poems

    Edna St. Vincent Millay

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, July 23, 2018)
"Renascence" is a 1912 poem by Edna St. Vincent Millay, credited with introducing her to the wider world, and often considered one of her finest poems. The poem is a 200+ line lyric poem, written in the first person, broadly encompassing the relationship of an individual to humanity and nature. The narrator is contemplating a vista from a mountaintop. Overwhelmed by nature, and thoughts of human suffering, the narrator empathetically feels the deaths of others, and feels pressed into a grave. Friendly rain brings the narrator back to joy in life—the rebirth, or "renascence", of the title.
