  • The cruise of the Snark,

    Jack London

Hardcover (The Macmillan company, Aug. 16, 1911)
THE CRUISE OF THE SNARK is Jack London’s story of the building of the Snark and his cruise with his wife Charmian, from San Francisco to Honolulu, then on through the South Seas. This was to have been the realization of a life’s dream for the author, however, as rumor has it, he was deeply in debt at the time although he claims to have paid for the building of the Snark himself. He had contracted with a magazine to deliver 35,000 words describing his trip for which he was to have been paid his standard story rate. However, the magazine promptly took credit for financing the entire trip. The trip progressed, but was plagued with troubles and misfortune. Overcome with health problems, the Londons were forced to abandon their planned voyage and return home to Glen Ellen, California. It is a fascinating story of the London’s cruise to the South Seas; Hawaii, the Marquesa’s, Tahiti, Bora Bora, the Solomon’s and Australia.. Chapters 5, 6, 7 and 8 are specifically of the portion of their trip that took place in Hawaiian waters. Mr. London presents artful word pictures of both land and sea and one of the most eloquent descriptions of the feat of surfing that I have had the pleasure of reading The story provides not only a view of the tropics through the eyes of one of America’s greatest authors, but also an opportunity to get to know him as an individual. Complimented by an array of photos numbering 119 and a LIST OF ILLUSTRATIONS at the front that identifies each. THE CRUISE OF THE SNARK is a dazzling collection piece. With more people interested in collecting, fewer and fewer of the early editions are becoming available on the open market with true First printings being a rarity. This 1st Impression of the 1st Edition still in very nice nice condition would be a wonderful addition to an Island library.
  • The Cruise of the Snark

    Jack London

Paperback (Bottom of the Hill Publishing, March 1, 2012)
The Cruise of the Snark is a non-fictional, illustrated book by Jack London chronicling his sailing adventure across the south Pacific in his ketch the Snark. Accompanying London on this voyage was his wife Charmian and a small crew. London taught himself celestial navigation and the basics of sailing and of boats during the course of this adventure and describes these details to the reader. During the voyage they visited exotic locations including the Solomon Islands and Hawaii. His first-person accounts and photographs provide insight into these remote places at the beginning of the 20th century. Jack London was an American author, journalist, and social activist, a pioneer in the world of commercial magazine fiction and was one of the first fiction writers to obtain worldwide celebrity and a large fortune from his fiction alone. He is best remembered as the author of Call of the Wild and White Fang, both set in the Klondike Gold Rush. He also wrote of the South Pacific in such stories as The Pearls of Parlay and The Heathen, and of the San Francisco Bay area in The Sea Wolf.

  • The Cruise Of The Snark

    Jack London

Paperback (NuVision Publications, LLC, Dec. 16, 2008)
Considered by many to be America's finest author, Jack London, had little formal schooling. Initially, he attended school only through the 8th grade, although he was an avid reader, educating himself at public libraries, especially the Oakland Public Library under the tutelage of Ina Coolbrith, who later became the first poet laureate of California. In later years (mid-1890s), Jack returned to high school in Oakland and graduated. He eventually gained admittance to U.C. Berkeley, but stayed only for six months, finding it to be "not alive enough" and a "passionless pursuit of passionless intelligence". Once Jack had resolved himself to succeed as an author, his diligent habits and innate skills catapulted him far beyond most of his literary peers in both perspective and content. By following a strict writing regimen of 1,000 words a day, he was able to produce a huge quantity of high quality work over a period of eighteen years. Jack had become the best-selling, highest paid and most popular American author of his time.

  • The Cruise of the Snark

    Professor Jack London

Hardcover (Kegan Paul, Nov. 6, 2002)
This is Jack London's account of the fulfillment of his boyhood dream of sailing in the Pacific in the wake of Herman Melville and Robert Louis Stevenson. His first Pacific port of call was Hawaii, where his thrilling description of surfing at Waikiki popularized the sport that has now spread around the world. The voyage continued on through the Marquesas, Tahiti, Samoa, Fiji, the New Hebrides and the Solomon Islands, ending in Sydney, Australia. Although his odyssey was a troubled one, London's Polynesian adventure renewed his faith in individual effort, courage, and daring. And it is this theme, which runs through The Cruise of the Snark like a golden thread, that makes it a book of universal appeal as well as one of the finest account of Pacific sailing ever written.
