  • Poems

    Edgar Allan Poe

Paperback (Forgotten Books, June 4, 2015)
Pull up a chair by next to the fire to warm your bones after reading this chilling anthology of Edgar Allen Poe's poetry. Considered to be the father of modern science fiction (as well as the murder mystery), many readers forget that Poe started as an illustrious poet. From the haunting refrains of "The Raven" to the angelic lilt of the musical "Israfel", Poe's Poems will stir uncontrollable feelings of romance and despair. A pre-eminent indicator of taste, Poe had the uncanny ability to weigh public opinion and predict literary trends before even the public knew they were popular. Due, in part, to his decades of work as a publisher, Poe had a keen understanding of the human psyche and the reader's willingness to abandon logic and delve into the mysterious. Focusing primarily on gothic works, Poe shaped a generation of authors and achieved relative success within his lifetime (something unknown at that time for American authors).Perhaps Poe's most famous work, "The Raven" is included in this anthology. A dark tale, full of foreshadow and darkness, "The Raven" is noted for its musicality and gothic descriptions: "Then, methought, the air grew denser, perfumed from an unseen censer swung by angels whose faint foot-falls tinkled on the tufted floor". Poe was a master of the art of both fiction and prose and his work continues to inspire, even to this day.Poems is ideal for any reader interested in poetry, macabre, humor, romanticism, and Gothic Fiction. Whether purchasing it for yourself or as a gift to share with a friend or loved one, Poems is sure to capture the heart and the imagination.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. • The Poems of Edgar Allan Poe: Edited

    Edgar Allan Poe

Paperback (Forgotten Books, Nov. 25, 2017)
Excerpt from The Poems of Edgar Allan Poe: EditedThis edition of ipoe's Poems includes all the poems collected either by the poet himself or by his literary executor, Rufus 'w. Griswold. I have endeavored to give also a complete and accu rate record of the multifarious revisions made by the poet in republishing his verses a matter of extreme importance for the understanding of his art; and I have departed from former editors in presenting these at the foot of the page along with the text to which they refer, where alone they may be easily consulted. In the Notes - and here, again, I have departed from former edi tors I have given a full and detailed commentary on each of the poems. From the vast body of material, biographical, historical, critical, and interpretative, that has been written about Poe, I have endeavored to garner whatever will contribute to a truer under standing of his poems or to a juster appreciation of them. And where comment from others was wanting or seemed inadequate, I have attempted to supply the deficiency by researches of my own. In particular, I have addressed myself to the following matters: the circumstances of composition and publication of each of the poems, the relation of the poems to each other and to the tales, the poet's relation to other poets and to his time, the autobiographical element in his verses, and the judgments passed on his work by his contemporaries. In the Introduction I have set forth the main facts of the poet's life, adding certain details of my own discovery; and I have also dealt there with questions of authenticity and authority of text, with the nature and the worth of the poet's textual revisions, with his sources, and with the diversity of opinion respecting his achieve ment as poet.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
