  • The Surprising Adventures of Baron Munchausen

    Rudolph Erich Raspe

    Paperback (Blurb, April 28, 2019)
Baron Hieronymus Karl Friedrich, Freiherr von MĂĽnchhausen, was an actual baron living in 18th-century Hanover famous for entertaining his guests with outrageously-embellished tales of his wartime exploits-so much so that his nickname in German is LĂĽgenbaron, or "Baron of Lies." When Rudolph Eric Raspe, a writer and scientist living in England, heard of the Baron's tales, he wrote his own versions centered around a fictional Baron Munchausen. While the real Baron wasn't amused to have his name attached to a silly character famous for his bald-faced lies, Raspe's tales became hugely popular, reprinted for hundreds of years and illustrated just as many times. These very short tales were originally intended as contemporary satire, but their outrageous silliness is still entertaining today.

  • The Surprising Adventures of Baron Munchausen

    Rudolf Erich Raspe

Paperback (Independently published, July 4, 2020)
An instant best-seller and hailed as a comic sensation in the satirical spirit of Gulliver’s Travels and Tom Jones. The Baron’s fantastically exaggerated accounts of war adventures and hunting experiences make this one of the most entertaining books of all time. His astounding feats include riding cannonballs, traveling to the Moon, and pulling himself out of a bog by his own hair. But could they actually be true? “We, the undersigned, do most solemnly affirm, that all the adventures of our friend Baron Munchausen are positive and simple facts. We hope all true believers will give him their full faith and credence. (signed) GULLIVER. SINBAD. ALADDIN.” The author himself led a life worthy of a tall tale: naturalist, antiquarian, scholar, and thief, his name figures with Daniel Defoe and Johnathan Swift as one of the great “travel liars.”

Baron Munchausen's astounding feats included riding cannonballs, traveling to the Moon, and pulling himself out of a bog by his own hair. Listeners delighted in hearing about these unlikely adventures, and in 1785, the stories were collected and published as Baron Munchausen's Narrative of his Marvellous Travels and Campaigns in Russia. By the nineteenth century, the tales had undergone expansions and transformations by several notable authors and had been translated into many languages. A figure as colorful as the Baron naturally appeals to the artistic imagination, and he has been depicted in numerous works of art. His definitive visual image, however, belongs to Gustave Doré. Famed for his engravings of scenes from the Bible, the Divine Comedy, Don Quixote, and other literary classics, Doré created theatrical illustrations of the Baron's escapades that perfectly re-create the stories' picaresque humor.
