From the description of the homemade dory to the account of New Hampshire people, the book maintains an air of romantic adventure. Simple travel narrative, however, it is not. Thoreau takes advantage of the scenes to digress into history, religion, philosophy, poetry, discussions of literary classics and Emersonian essays.
