It was originally serialised between 1842 and 1844. Dickens thought it to be his best work, but it was one of his least popular novels. Like nearly all of Dickens' novels, Martin Chuzzlewit was released to the public in monthly instalments. Early sales of the monthly parts were disappointing, compared to previous works, so Dickens changed the plot to send the title character to America. This allowed the author to portray the United States (which he had visited in 1842) satirically as a near wilderness with pockets of civilisation filled with deceptive and self-promoting hucksters. Martin Chuzzlewit has been raised by his grandfather and namesake. Years before, Martin senior took the precaution of raising an orphaned girl, Mary Graham. She is to be his nursemaid, with the understanding that she will be well cared for only as long as Martin senior lives. She thus has strong motivation to promote his well-being, in contrast to his relatives, who only want to inherit his money. However, his grandson Martin falls in love with Mary and wishes to marry her, ruining Martin senior's plans. When Martin refuses to give up the engagement, his grandfather disinherits him.

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, Dec. 20, 2016)
Charles Dickens was one of the greatest authors in history. Dickens's books, which feature some of the most famous fictional characters, were very successful during his lifetime and they remain just as popular and celebrated today. Most students can't get through high school without reading a couple of Dickens's classic stories and there are many college courses dedicated to his literature. Martin Chuzzlewit, published in 1844, is a picaresque novel that Dickens considered to be one of his finest works. The book centers around the title character, who has been raised by his grandfather along with an orphaned girl named Mary. When Martin falls in love with Mary it ruins his grandfather's plans and leads to him disinheriting his grandson.

  • Martin Chuzzlewit: The 1844 Theatrical Adaptation

    Edward Stirling, Charles Dickens

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, Jan. 16, 2017)
Edward Stirling’s adaptation was the first theatrical version of Martin Chuzzlewit and was the only version that was approved by Dickens. When it was first produced in 1844, it was an immediate success and had a lengthy run at London’s Lyceum Theatre. Considered at the time the best of the Chuzzlewit adaptations it would continue to be produced throughout the 19th Century. Edward Stirling was a prolific playwright in the mid-19th century having written or adapted over 200 plays including many from Dickens. He was one of the few playwrights at the time to have his plays produced in nearly every theatre in London. He was hailed as “a writer of considerable attainments.” When he wasn’t writing, he was stage manager/director of the Adelphia, and later for many years at the Drury Lane Theatre where he had some of his biggest successes.
