  • Thus Spoke Zarathustra

    Friedrich Nietzsche

    Paperback (Simon & Brown, March 6, 2012)
Written in a series of frenzied bursts between 1883 and 1885, Thus Spoke Zarathustra is Friedrich Nietzsche's masterpiece. It is also one of the most controversial books in the history of European literature - a founding classic of modernism in philosophy and poetics, which promised to "break the history of humanity in two."Zarathustra - "Star of Gold" - the sun-worshipping prophet of the earliest strain of monotheism, returns to recant and condemn his own ideas in the name of an entity he calls the bermensch (super-human). He wanders through a strangely familiar land whose customs, laws, and values have been mortgaged to religion and commerce. The people who live there believe they exist at the summit of civilization, wealth, freedom and good taste; Zarathustra's chosen mission is to educate them that the very opposite is true. This revelatory new translation by Dr. Stephen J Metcalf strips Thus Spoke Zarathustra down to its foundations in Gothic horror, and discovers a much darker book than previously suggested - not content with the empty refrain of "God is dead," it sings a dithyramb to the earth at the same time as it mercilessly hunts down the concept of humanity to its theological bedrock. Epic and neo-classical, minimalist and ultra-modern; at times aggressive and confrontational, at others tender, lyrical, grotesque and comical - this is the closest reproduction of the tone and tenor of the German original available in English today.

    Friedrich Nietzsche

Paperback (Independently published, March 16, 2020)
Nietzscheā€™s most controversial, and probably his most important work. The concepts that ā€œGod is Deadā€ and ā€œEternal Recurrenceā€ with their attendant ramifications are major features of this work. Highly original and inventive, part literature, part philosophy, it parodies both, in its stylistic resemblance to the New Testament and Pre-Socratic Greek writings. Through a fictionalized version the character Zarathustra, the legendary founder of Zoroasterianism, Nietzsche propounds a new and different version of moral philosophy. During the course of the story presented in this loosely structured narrative, Nietzsche develops and presents a contrary view of mankind: as lying somewhere between the apes and the ultimate Superman, or Ubermensch. Ranging from unsupported assumptions to rigorous argument - from exposition to dialog to poetry - Thus Spake Zarathustra is a surprising, engaging and thought provoking look at the condition of mankind. Nietzsche himself considered this to be his most important work. His tragic end, in a state of complete mental breakdown, precluded any possibility that it would be superseded and raised a question of the association between madness and genius.Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche was a 19th-century German philosopher and classical philologist. He wrote critical texts on religion, morality, contemporary culture, philosophy and science, using a distinctive rhetorical and evocative style, displaying a fondness for metaphor, irony and aphorism. Nietzscheā€™s influence remains substantial within and beyond philosophy, notably in existentialism and post-modernism. His style and radical questioning of the value and objectivity of truth have resulted in much commentary and interpretation, mostly in the continental tradition. His key ideas include the death of God, perspectivism, the Ɯbermensch, the eternal recurrence, and the will to power.

Thus Spoke Zarathustra (German: Also sprach Zarathustra, sometimes translated Thus Spake Zarathustra), subtitled A Book for All and None (Ein Buch fĆ¼r Alle und Keinen), is a written work by German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, composed in four parts between 1883 and 1885. Much of the work deals with ideas such as the "eternal recurrence of the same", the parable on the "death of God", and the "prophecy" of the Overman, which were first introduced in The Gay Science.Described by Nietzsche himself as "the deepest ever written", the book is a dense and esoteric treatise on philosophy and morality, featuring as protagonist a fictionalized Zarathustra. A central irony of the text is that the style of the Bible is used by Nietzsche to present ideas of his which fundamentally oppose Judaeo-Christian morality and tradition.
