About the Book Books dealing with State and local histories in the United States may examine a city, a suburb, a municipality, a region, a community, an association, a church group, or the entire State. In fact, local history, is the largest category of history publishing. Often being of the community that is the subject of the book, local or regional historians can provide a specific insight into their subject matter. Also in this Book The next decades up to World War 1 saw large migrations from Europe and massive growth in the US economy. The US had a short but decisive influence on World War 1, suffered during the Great Depression, and had an even greater decisive influence on the outcome of World War 2. The US then engaged in a Cold War with its military and ideological adversary, the USSR, which disintegrated in 1991. Over the 20th century the US was not just a dynamo of technological advancement, but also contributed greatly to world growth. • The Island

    John Bigonette Jr.

Hardcover (iUniverse, Inc., Jan. 24, 2005)
In the year 2010 a cataclysmic event on Earth renders maps and governments obsolete. All technological gains enjoyed at the beginning of the twenty-first century are lost, and life on Earth reverts back to the Middle Ages. Over the next couple centuries, kingdoms fielding medieval armies sprout where governments once flourished, and barbarians rule both ocean and land with iron fists. Four hundred years after the world is changed forever, hope burns brightly on a small inaccessible island in the middle of the New Ocean. Within the confines of a ring of fourteen thousand foot mountains, a few hundred children live in what appears to be a utopian paradise. Unaware of the evil lurking just over the mountains, they naively enjoy technological gadgets only dreamed of at the end of the twenty-first century. The driving force behind all of the technological advancement on the island is the once-in-a-millennium genius named George. With two friends, George sets out from the island in search of lost comrades. Their simple mission quickly morphs into much more after they befriend the good people of New Wales and become entangled with the evil king Tabour.

  • The House of Islâm

    Marmaduke William Pickthall

Paperback (Forgotten Books, Aug. 21, 2012)
Sultan Abdul Mejid Khan, upon termination of the war with Muscovy, a multitude of faithful Georgians and Circassians chose to cast themselves, their women and children, upon the bounty of the Padishah rather than endure the yoke of an infidel conqueror. They begged but leave to settle in some part of the Sultans dominions, to dwell in peace among true believers in obedience to the law of God, as transmitted to Muhammed, His A postle. But their spokesmen had fierce eyes, and, when a little emphasis seemed called for, each clutched quite naturally at the dagger in his sash. The Sultan sadvisers black-coated, red-capped Othmanlis of the eyes that see but never look noted this slight discrepancy while placidly telling their beads. There were lawless spots in the empire.(Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.)About the Publisher Forgotten Books is a publisher of historical writings, such as: Philosophy, Classics, Science, Religion, History, Folklore and Mythology.Forgotten Books' Classic Reprint Series utilizes the latest technology to regenerate facsimiles of historically important writings.
