This book is designed to be a crossover book for those children that are attempting to graduate from pictured storybooks to chapter-length books. With simple, black-and-white illustrations on each page, kids will focus on the words. And with the book being broken up into short chapters, confidence in reading will increase with each page. The authors use alliteration throughout, introducing new vocabulary to prepare children for intermediate school. Gilbert the Grasshopper also sparks a child's interest in travel and exploring new places… along with the theme of sharing your knowledge with others.

  • The Grumbling Grasshopper

    Kenneth Edward Barnes

    eBook
The Grumbling Grasshopper is a short story about a grasshopper that has never left the bush where he has spent his entire life. Not knowing anything other than his life on this bush, he soon gets into a heated discussion with a caterpillar. The caterpillar is trying to spin a cocoon because winter will soon be arriving. Since the grasshopper has only lived during the summer, he does not believe the caterpillar when she tells him about winter. Soon the caterpillar tells the grasshopper to go away and leave her in peace, but the grasshopper is afraid to leave the safety of his bush. Then, because of the grasshopper’s loud discussion with the caterpillar a third insect soon arrives. Another heated discussion takes place and the grasshopper learns that there is danger everywhere, even on his bush. It is too late, however, and the grasshopper is never heard grumbling again! After the story, there is a short stage play. It is simple with only three characters.
