As part of our on-going commitment to delivering value to the reader, we have also provided you with a link to a website, where you may download a digital version of this work for free. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. Whilst the books in this collection have not been hand curated, an aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature. As a result of this book being first published many decades ago, it may have occasional imperfections. These imperfections may include poor picture quality, blurred or missing text. While some of these imperfections may have appeared in the original work, others may have resulted from the scanning process that has been applied. However, our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. While some publishers have applied optical character recognition (OCR), this approach has its own drawbacks, which include formatting errors, misspelt words, or the presence of inappropriate characters. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with an experience that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic book, and that the occasional imperfection that it might contain will not detract from the experience.

    Ivan Turgenieff

Paperback (Forgotten Books, Jan. 22, 2018)
Excerpt from SmokeProbably the mildest thing that was said of it was: The great writer's new work produces a mournful though powerful impression. It is distinguished, like his previous works, for its beauty, fervent feeling, and force of thought; but it lacks the former faith; it is permeated we will not say with despair, but with almost in consolable sadness. It was asserted that in Smoke Turgénieff had presented the other side of nihilism what a well-known Russian writer of the times designated as the nihilism of generals -that is to say, of the more or less prominent persons who were in opposition to the Russian Government at that period because of the abolition of serfdom. Full observations of that class could be made precisely where the author laid the scene of his story, in Baden Baden.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Ivan Turgenev

Paperback (Independently published, April 3, 2020)
Set in Baden-Baden, Smoke is Ivan Turgenev’s most cosmopolitan novels. It is an exquisite study of politics and society and an enduringly poignant love story. Smoke, with its European setting, barbed wit, and visionary call for Russia to look west, became the center of a famous philosophical breach between Turgenev and Dostoevsky. On his way back to Russia after some years spent in the West, Grigory Mikhailovich Litvinov, the son of a retired official of merchant stock, stops over in Baden-Baden to meet his fiancée Tatyana. However, a chance encounter with his old flame, the manipulative Irina—now married to a general and a prominent figure in aristocratic expatriate circles—unearths feelings buried deep inside the young man’s heart, derailing his plans for the future and throwing his life into turmoil. Around this love story Turgenev constructs a sharply satirical exposé of his countrymen, which famously embroiled its author in a heated quarrel with Dostoevsky. A melancholy evocation of impossible romance, Smoke represents the apogee of Turgenev’s later fiction.
