Rumors swirl, but the shunned and shamed Hester keeps her secret—and his—for years, until a guilt-ridden confession reveals the truth, with unexpected consequences.Set in seventeenth-century Massachusetts, Hawthorne’s masterwork was originally subtitled “a romance,” though its themes include the limits of law, the power of religion, and the nature of sin. • Scarlet's Secret

    Simon Klapish

language (Simon Klapish, Jan. 15, 2014)
There are some things that a girl just shouldn't talk about, especially when it's something that can make you a target. Scarlet made that mistake before, and it wouldn't happen again, no matter what, even though high school should be different. Still, her best friend was not included in that rule. She could be trusted. But secrets cause problems, sometimes little ones by mistake, and sometimes larger ones that cause serious trouble. Even when you're trying to do the right thing, it can backfire. But new troubles can also create new opportunities, and even take a girl far from home in order to chase her dreams. So as the year continues to throw an increasing number of trials at Scarlet, it also provides some unexpected positives, like her first kiss, alongside the more serious growing pains. Balancing it all out is proving to be very hard, but hopefully worth it.
