Pollyanna is a best-selling 1913 novel by Eleanor H. Porter that is now considered a classic of children's literature, with the title character's name becoming a popular term for someone with the same very optimistic outlook. Also, the subconscious bias towards the positive is often described as the Pollyanna principle. The book was such a success that Porter soon produced a sequel, Pollyanna Grows Up (1915). Eleven more Pollyanna sequels, known as "Glad Books", were later published, most of them written by Elizabeth Borton or Harriet Lummis Smith. Further sequels followed, including Pollyanna Plays the Game by Colleen L. Reece, published in 1997.

Porter 저자: 엘리너 H. 포터 (Eleanor Hodgman Porter,1868~1920) 미국 아동문학 작가, 뉴햄프셔에서 태어남, 병약한 소녀시절을 보낸후 보스톤 음악학교에서 수학, 24세에 결혼, 그후 문학활동을 시작함. 1913년 출간한 폴리아나로 광범위한 독자들의 호응을 얻음. 작품 폴리아나는 여러차례 영화화 되었고 애니메이션,만화,연극으로 되어 많은 사람들의 사랑을 받고 있슴. 본 작품은 1913년 출판된 엘리너 포터의 대표작으로 항상 best young adult (최고의 청소년 문학)에 꼽혀온 작품이다. 하지만 이 작품은 성인이 읽더라도 조금도 손색이 없는 작품이다. 여러 번 영화로도 만들어져 무성영화 시절에는 Mary Pickford가 출연했고 1960년도 디즈니 영화에서는 Haley Mills가 출연하여 오스카 상을 거머 쥐었고 2003년에는 Georgina Terry가 출연했다. 항상 모든 일에 낙관적인 태도로 모든 일에서 ‘다행스럽고, 즐겁고, 기쁜’ 면을 찾으려고 하는 폴리아나는 11살에 고아가 되어 동부에 사는 쌀쌀맞고 엄격한 노처녀 이모 집에 살러 가게 되고 40세의 이모와 주변 사람들에게 ‘사는 것’을 가르치게 된다. 물론 폴리아나가 가야 될 길은 결코 순탄치 않지만……어떠한 상황에서도 폴리아나는 ‘희망’을 발견한다. 100년 전의 작품이지만 오늘날에도 널리 읽혀 Pollyanna Principle, Pollyannaism, Pollyannaish라는 단어는 사전에도 올라있을 정도가 되었다.
