Life on the Mississippi was released in 1883 as a memoir by Mark Twain of his days as a steamboat pilot on the Mississippi River before the American Civil War, as well as travels on the river after the war. The writing shows Twain's love for the river and how it was uniquely American. The book was the first submitted for publishing as a typewritten manuscript.

The book's title derives from a speech given by Holmes, a consulting detective, to his friend and chronicler Watson on the nature of his work, in which he describes the story's murder investigation as his "study in scarlet". The story, and its main characters, attracted little public interest when it first appeared. This book is the first of four full-length novels about Holmes. Doyle's other works were collections of short stories.

A nice edition with 50 illustrations from the original Strand Magazine editions.His Last Bow: Some Reminiscences of Sherlock Holmes is a collection of eight previously published Sherlock Holmes stories by Arthur Conan Doyle, including the title story, "His Last Bow." All editions contain a brief preface, by "John H. Watson, M.D.", that assures readers that as of the date of publication (1917), Holmes is long retired from his profession of detective but is still alive and well, albeit suffering from a touch of rheumatism. This edition has all the illustrations from the original Strand Magazine publications.
