  • The Middle Ages: A Captivating Guide to the History of Europe, Starting from the Fall of the Western Roman Empire Through the Black Death to the Beginning of the Renaissance

    Captivating History

Paperback (CH Publications, May 11, 2019)
If you want to discover the captivating history of the Middle Ages, then keep reading...One of the least understood periods of European history occurred between the 6th century and the 14th or 15th century (depending on which historian you ask). Commonly called the Middle Ages, this was a time period of extreme change for Europe, beginning with the fall of the Western Roman Empire. To a continent that had seen a drastic shift in the power structure, the world seemed to be particularly harsh. Rome had been a major player across Europe for well over a millennium. Then it was gone. This is also a time period that still inspires art, literature, and philosophy today. There were men who lived during the Middle Ages who are still quoted and revered today, such as Saint Thomas Aquinas. They were almost always men of the cloth (religious men), but not always. People still enjoy the works of Geoffrey Chaucer, a famous writer who was also a merchant. The architecture of this time has also been used and reused for many centuries as well. The cathedrals and castles built during the Middle Ages still remain while younger structures have long since crumbled. Perhaps the most famous architecture from the time though is known as the Gothic style. The look and feel of the Gothic style have inspired many generations, including the Romantics of the 1800s and the horror/mystery genre that is still so popular today. However, it was the birth of universities that reflects the thinking of the time. Prior to the Middle Ages, there was no higher education. Many of the institutions and ideas that the men of the Renaissance would explore began during the Middle Ages. It was a time when Europe healed from the fall of one superpower and transitioned into something that more closely resembled the map of Europe today. It would undergo many more changes in the years following the Middle Ages, but nations began to find their identities without their Roman overlords. In The Middle Ages: A Captivating Guide to the History of Europe, Starting from the Fall of the Western Roman Empire Through the Black Death to the Beginning of the Renaissance, you will discover topics such asFall of the Western Roman EmpireStewards of the Future – The Rise of the Byzantine EmpireReclaiming Spain and Expanding One of the Strongest and Earliest Kingdoms of the Middle AgesCharlemagne – A Brief Return to the EmpireOtto I and His New EmpireThe Great SchismThe Famous (or Infamous) Crusades – 1095 to 1291Forging a New EnglandThe Hundred Years’ War – 1337 to 1453The Horrors of NatureHigher Education and The Gothic Period – How the Middle Ages Advanced Education and ArchitectureThe RenaissanceAnd much, much more!So if you want to learn more about the Middle Ages, scroll up and click the "add to cart" button!

  • Galileo Galilei - A Short Biography: 30 Minute Book Series

Doug West, Gregory Diehl, C&D Publications

    Audible Audiobook (C&D Publications, July 30, 2015)
Galileo Galilei grew up in a time when nearly everyone thought the Earth was the center of the universe and the Sun and the planets revolved around the Earth. His intellectual world was dominated by the work of the ancient philosopher Aristotle. Science as we know it today was just starting to emerge from the dark ages and it was blended with religion so at first, it was hard to distinguish between the two. Galileo's work included a radial improvement in a parlor toy called a spyglass, which he turned into a working instrument of astronomy, the military, and mariners. With his small telescope he opened up the night sky and discovered the Moon isn't smooth but rather covered with peaks and valleys similar to the Earth, that the planet Jupiter had moons that orbited the planet, and that the planet Venus showed phases as it orbited the Sun - similar to the phases of the Moon. Though his discoveries in astronomy were transformative, they spelled trouble for Galileo. Once the local clergy got wind of Galileo's heretical views that the Earth was not the center of the universe, he was under intense scrutiny from the Church. He traveled to Rome, not once but twice, to defend his views on the cosmos. Escaping the penalty of imprisonment or being burnt at the stake, he was given house arrest for the remainder of his life. Working under house arrest, he was able to complete some the most important work of his life and he had his work smuggled out of Italy to be published without censorship. Take a short journey into the world of this amazing man and understand how he changed the world.

  • Construction Claims: A Short Guide for Contractors

    Paul Netscher

eBook (Panet Publications, Sept. 11, 2016)
Is your client causing you additional costs? Learn how to effectively handle construction project variation claims in this easy to read book with no legal jargon. Essential reading for every successful construction project manager.Have you had a legitimate construction variation claim rejected? In the course of most construction projects delays, variations and additional work occur, which give rise to variation claims. These variation claims can be between the owner or client and the contractor, or between the contractor and their subcontractors. Some construction project managers aren’t aware of what they are entitled to claim. Often contractors aren’t granted all the time, or money, that they are entitled to, and frequently many variation claims end in lengthy and expensive disputes where both parties end as losers. I’ve been involved with over 120 construction projects and only a few haven’t increased in value – with some almost doubling. Indeed, some construction variation claims have been worth millions of dollars. Many of my projects also suffered delays and I claimed extension of time – sometimes for several months. Fortunately, in nearly every case, these variation claims were resolved and approved amicably. In most cases we received close to the full value claimed or were granted the entire extension of time requested. Furthermore, mostly we remained on good terms with our client and went on to construct several more projects for them. This book uses these real-world examples to help with your construction variation, delay and disruption claims. It’s important that contractors present their construction variation claims timeously and in a fashion that’s hard to refute. In this book I look at reasons for lodging a construction variation claims, delay claims and disruption claims, the supporting documentation required to substantiate the claim, what to include in the claim, negotiating the claim, and finally avoiding variation claims. Regrettably many construction project managers don’t understand their contractual rights and obligations. This easy to read book demystifies the construction project variation claims process, ensuring contractors are granted the extension of time and costs they’re entitled to. Also included are sections on avoiding variation claims from clients and subcontractors. Know your rights and obligations in terms of the project contract. Make sure that you submit winning construction variation claims. Ensure you claim all the time and costs due to you. Learn how to refute variation claims lodged against you.
