There are 79 photographs including pictures by Don James and memorable scenes such as Mark Twain gulping saltwater after his board is washed up on the beach. All the joy, the danger and the freedom of riding the big waves are told in story, poem and pictrure by the giants of the sport: Duke Kahanamoku, George Freeth, Tom Blake, Eugene Burdick and Dr. John Heath Ball. The excitement and power of water and waves are described by such diverse enthusiasts as Lord Byron, Rick Griffin, Ronald Colby, Walt Whitman, Ron Church, and Gidget. Even Snoopy of the Peanuts cartoon fame gets into the water. Mr. Klein is a well-known author of surfing books.

There is some shelf wear & some hints of white staining on the cloth, with modest corner & edge wear, a slight cock to the spine resulting in slightly skewed covers & pages, & yellowed pages, as well as wear & aging on the dustjacket, with larger chips & some tearing & creasing along the outer edges; the book is otherwise in very good condition with clean print & secure pages.

In spite of his strained pitching arm, Pete Barnard's fast ball wins him a chance with the big league Eagles. Before joining the major league team, Pete is sent to the minors for seasoning. There he is thrilled to be relief pitcher for his boyhood hero, Chief Fenton, who can still pitch a magnificent game although he is over forty. Pete recoups several games for the weary Fenton and begins to score high with local sports columnists. But Fenton, fearing that Pete will spoil his chances for a big league comeback, is cold and unfriendly--and so is his attractive daughter, Rose. Local reporters are mystified when they see Pete spending more and more time in the bull pen. Pete has his fast ball, but he is afraid of trying a curve.
