  • To Kill an Eagle: Indian Views on The Last Days of Crazy Horse

    Edward Kadlecek, Mabell Kadlecek

Paperback (Johnson Publishing Company, March 15, 1987)
This unusual book came about as a result of a visit by Sioux friends to the authors' farm in Beaver Valley in northwestern Nebraska. The people told the Kadleceks that the valley had been one of Crazy Horse's favorite places. They knew some things about the great warrior that had either never been published or that contradicted the commonly accepted story and thought that their versions should be recorded before they were lost. The authors accordingly interviewed nearly thirty people who either remembered things about Crazy Horse themselves or had been told them by older relatives. These accounts, combined with research in published and unpublished documents, have made possible a unique book that sheds new light on Crazy Horse and his people. The authors are able to tie episodes in the chief's life to specific geographical areas, to clarify for the first time the confused events following his death, and to make a strong case for the exact place of his burial.
