  • The Scarecrow of Oz & Rinkitink in Oz

    L Frank Baum

Hardcover (Prince Classics, July 25, 2019)
The Scarecrow of Oz is the ninth book set in the Land of Oz written by L. Frank Baum. Published on July 16, 1915, it was Baum's personal favorite of the Oz books and tells of Cap'n Bill and Trot journeying to Oz and, with the help of the Scarecrow, overthrowing the cruel King Krewl of Jinxland. Cap'n Bill and Trot (Mayre Griffiths) had previously appeared in two other novels by Baum, The Sea Fairies and Sky Island.Rinkitink in Oz: Wherein is Recorded the Perilous Quest of Prince Inga of Pingaree and King Rinkitink in the Magical Isles that Lie Beyond the Borderland of Oz. is the tenth book in the Land of Oz series written by L. Frank Baum. Published on June 20, 1916, it is significant that no one from Oz appears in the book until its climax; this is due to Baum's having originally written most of the book as an original fantasy novel over ten years earlier, in 1905. Most of the action takes place on three islands - Pingaree, Regos, and Coregos - and within the Nome King's caverns. Since the original ruler of the nomes, Roquat - who later renamed himself Ruggedo, was deposed in 1914's Tik-Tok of Oz, Baum had to cleverly rework the tale to accommodate his successor, the well-intentioned - but politically motivated - Kaliko. The book was dedicated to the author's newborn grandson Robert Alison Baum, the first child of the author's second son Robert Stanton Baum.

Seems to me, said Cap'n Bill, as he sat beside Trot under the big acacia tree, looking out over the blue ocean, "seems to me, Trot, as how the more we know, the more we find we don't know." "I can't quite make that out, Cap'n Bill," answered the little girl in a serious voice, after a moment's thought, during which her eyes followed those of the old sailor-man across the glassy surface of the sea. "Seems to me that all we learn is jus' so much gained."

The Scarecrow of Oz by L. Frank Baum Though it is not usually ranked among the most famous Oz stories by L. Frank Baum, The Scarecrow of Oz is just as brilliant as the other, more famous stories. The ninth book the action of which takes place in the wonderful Land of Oz was the author’s personal favorite and it is indeed a masterpiece. The mix of Oz and non-Oz characters into one story was the result of the request made by Baum’s readers and a great invention that gave birth to a story that captivates any reader, child and adult alike. The story is eventful and quick-paced, but it is interesting to note that the Scarecrow himself makes his appearance only in the second half of the book. Up to that point, the story revolves around a girl called Trot and her friend, Cap’n Bill, a former sailor with a wooden leg - two characters the reader might be familiar with from Baum’s other, non-Oz stories. The two are out on a rowboat trip when the weather turns stormy, a whirlpool appears and they get lost in it to find themselves in the Land of Oz, wondering about, meeting magical characters. The creatures they encounter are really amazing – we see orks (for Baum, an ork is a helpful being, not the monsters we have been used to ever since Tolkien), magical berries that can make the eater grow, others that will have the opposite effect, shrinking the creature consuming them, strange birds, we have the wicked witch and the Scarecrow himself – the favorite character of many Oz enthusiasts. All Oz books, the Scarecrow included, are timeless pieces, teaching the reader about friendship, emotions, love and many other important things - and all these in an unnoticeable way, entertaining both children and adult readers with the most colorful fantasy setting ever.
