This is the play-text/program for the 2020 production of Measure For Measure. This publication is the actors play text so there are no stage directions, its formatted in the old English folio, and it’s specific to our company’s minimalistic approach to productions. This socially distanced production integrated the most restrictive measures to combat the transmission COVID-19 into the production such as actors in face coverings, the maintaining of 6ft in the blocking, and single use props- to name a few.

Mercy and Justice-- Measure for Measure is a play that balances Mercy against Justice and pride against humility. Vincentio, the Duke of Vienna, tells his people that he is leaving on a diplomatic mission and will leave the city in the care of a judge, Angelo. But the Duke does not leave, he disguises himself and see how his fair city is run in his absence.

Telling his followers he is leaving the city on affairs of state, the Duke of Vienna appoints the puritanical Angelo to govern in his absence. Will Angelo prove as virtuous as he seems once power is in his hands? Roaming the city disguised as a friar, the duke looks on as Angelo's lust for the virtuous Isabella sweeps him into the corruption he has so sternly condemned in others. The duke's manipulation at last produces a happy ending for this dark comedy, with its brilliant exploration of the themes of justice and mercy.Roger Allam plays the duke and Simon Russell Beale is Angelo. Isabella is played by Stella Gonet.
