After Professor Challenger adventures in “The Lost World” he finds that the earth is to collide with a poisonous ether. Summoning his companions from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s earlier novella to his house outside London where Challenger seals everyone in the room. Locked in the room they are protected for now but it is only so long till they run out of oxygen and have to venture out into this new world.

Professor Challenger imperiously summons his three best friends to come to his country house, each one to bring a cylinder of pure oxygen. When they arrive, the reason for this strange request becomes terrifyingly clear, Professor Challenger has become convinced that the earth is entering a poison belt of ether and that life upon this planet is doomed.

What would you do if you had discovered that the planet was about to be engulfed in a belt of poisonous "ether" from outer space? Professor Challenger invites a hand-picked crew of adventurers and scientists to his home outside London, which has been fortified with several hours' worth of oxygen. Challenger & Co. assemble in front of a picture window to witness the end of all life on the planet. As birds plummet from the sky, trains crash, and men and women topple over before their horrified gaze, they debate everything from the possibilities of the universe to the "abysses that lie upon either side of our material existence".

It is imperative that now at once, while these stupendous events are still clear in my mind, I should set them down with that exactness of detail which time may blur. But even as I do so, I am overwhelmed by the wonder of the fact that it should be our little group of the "Lost World"—Professor Challenger, Professor Summerlee, Lord John Roxton, and myself—who have passed through this amazing experience. When, some years ago, I chronicled in the Daily Gazette our epoch-making journey in South America, I little thought that it should ever fall to my lot to tell an even stranger personal experience, one which is unique in all human annals and must stand out in the records of history as a great peak among the humble foothills which surround it. The event itself will always be marvellous, but the circumstances that we four were together at the time of this extraordinary episode came about in a most natural and, indeed, inevitable fashion. I will explain the events which led up to it as shortly and as clearly as I can, though I am well aware that the fuller the detail upon such a subject the more welcome it will be to the reader, for the public curiosity has been and still is insatiable.

This would be the last story written about Challenger until the 1920s, by which time Doyle's spiritualist beliefs had begun to affect his writing.

Professor Challenger and the gang from The Lost World return for another adventure, although this one is rather different. Challenger holds a reunion for members of the expedition to The Lost World which just so happens to coincide with the apparent end of the world. The Earth is passing through a belt of poison gas and the entire world will be suffocated. This couldn't be a more different story to The Lost World.It's far more sedate with the group huddled in Challenger's house, extending their life with a limited oxygen supply. I have always liked the end of the world scenario because it creates great fiction and this was one of the earliest examples. As well as a great concept, Conan Doyle has some great character stuff here. There's continued conflict between Challenger and Summerlee and Challenger continues to be the ridiculous but brilliant man he is. Interestingly he is actually far more human here and we see a different side to him due to the scenario and the presence of his wife. A very different book to The Lost World but one that is equally as enjoyable.An interesting story. It takes place some time after The Lost World and has our four intrepid explorers in quite a different quandary. Finding that the Earth will pass through a belt of poisonous gas and leaves virtually everyone apparently dead. We come to see that the effects are only temporary with about 28 hours being lost to the inhabitants of this fair planet. It seems that the "deadly poison" only caused simulated death in almost everyone on the planet. In the end the whole of the world wakes back up and starts back at it virtually right where they flopped over in the beginning.

In the course of its serene spinning on through space the earth runs into a belt or stratum of poisonous vapor, which is deadly to every living thing on earth. The only warning given is an inexplicable blurring of Frauenhofer’s lines in the spectroscope, and Professor Challenger, the hairy, fiery-tempered scientist, is the only man keen enough to foresee what is coming. Behold then, the nations of the earth, one by one on a bright summer day, succumbing, suddenly insensible, to the poison vapor. Every animal thing suffers alike; birds fall dead from the branches; horses drop as they stand in their shafts; men drop at their work or play. Engineers falling at their posts, leave their trains full of unconscious humanity to rush on to destruction. Fires break out in a thousand cities and the human race, and indeed all animal life on the earth, comes apparently to a terrible end. The only exception is a little party who under Challenger‘s guidance seal themselves in a room in his country house with a supply of cylinders of oxygen ...
