It is mainly concerned with the romantic problems of Mary Thorne, niece of Doctor Thomas Thorne (a member of a junior branch of the family of Mr Wilfred Thorne, who appeared in Barchester Towers), and Frank Gresham, the only son of the local squire, although Trollope as the omniscient narrator assures the reader at the beginning that the hero is really the doctor. Major themes of the book are the social pain and exclusion caused by illegitimacy, the nefarious effects of the demon drink, and the difficulties of romantic attachments outside one's social class. The novel also gives a vivid picture of electioneering and all the just-legal shenanigans that accompany the event. Most of the action takes place in a village of Barsetshire and a country house not far off. The idea of the plot was suggested to Trollope by his brother Thomas.

    Anthony Trollope, N. John Hall

    Hardcover (Everyman's Library, Oct. 26, 1993)
Doctor Thorne (1858), the third novel in Anthony Trollope’s Barsetshire series, was the best-selling of his forty-seven novels during his lifetime, and remains one of his most widely read today. Young Frank Gresham, the heir of the squire of Greshamsbury, is determined to marry his beloved Mary Thorne, niece of the village physician. Frank’s family is violently opposed to the match, however, for they are in debt and in danger of losing their estate, and Mary is penniless and illegitimate. Dr. Thorne, Mary’s loving uncle, knows a secret about her origins that would change everything, but he wants her to be accepted on her own merits. The ensuing battle of wills plays out in a maelstrom of pride and money, love and self-doubt. Though the plot is more sensational than usual for Trollope—set in motion by a seduction and a murder—these potentially melodramatic elements never disrupt the utterly compelling realism of the author’s richly woven tapestry of provincial life.(Book Jacket Status: Not Jacketed)

    Anthony Trollope

Paperback (Norilana Books, May 15, 2007)
Doctor Thorne (1858) by Anthony Trollope is one of the charming series of loosely connected novels set in Barsetshire. This is the third book to appear in the series, but may be read as a standalone work, and enjoyed on its own merits. While the good Dr. Thomas Thorne is at the heart of the novel, it is the romantic story of his niece Mary Thorne and Frank Gresham -- a story with the playful sensibility of Jane Austen and the heartwarming cheer of Dickens.

Audio CD (Blackstone Audio, June 1, 2012)
[Read by Simon Vance] Book 3 in the 'Chronicles of Barsetshire' Anthony Trollope once said, 'A novel should give a picture of common life enlivened by humour and sweetened by pathos.' Trollope admirably fulfills his own criteria in this charming third novel in the Chronicles of Barsetshire. Doctor Thorne adopts his niece Mary, keeping secret her illegitimate birth as he introduces her to the best local social circles. There she meets and falls in love with Frank Gresham, heir to a vastly mortgaged estate; yet Frank is obliged to find a wealthy wife. --Only Doctor Thorne knows that Mary is to inherit a large legacy that will make her acceptable to the otherwise disapproving middle-class society to which Frank belongs. Where fiery passion fails, understated English virtues of patience, persistence, and good humor prevail in this most appealing of Trollope's novels.

    Anthony Ed Trollope

    Paperback (Digireads.com, Sept. 23, 2011)
Despite a decreasing popularity throughout his career, Anthony Trollope (1815-1882) has become one of the most notable and respected English novelists of the Victorian Era. His penetrating novels on political, social and gender issues of his day have placed him among such nineteenth century literary icons as Jane Austen, Charles Dickens and George Eliot. Trollope penned 47 novels in his career, in addition to various short stories, travel books and biographies. "Doctor Thorne" (1858) is the third novel in Trollope's series known as the "Chronicles of Barsetshire," and is argued to be Trollope's best work. It tells the story of Mary Thorne, the niece of Dr. Thomas Thorne, whose illegitimacy remains a secret for much of the novel as she is raised by her kind uncle and falls in love with the rich Frank Gresham. This melodramatic novel displays Trollope's brilliant management of plot and dialogue while exploring themes of illegitimacy, class division and the practice of marrying for money.
