Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, Nov. 5, 2016)
“The Frozen Pirate” is the bizarre story of Paul Rodney, a sailor who narrowly escapes death by shipwreck and exposure in the Straits of Magellan, then faces further peril. Embedded in the Antarctic ice is an ancient vessel, a pirate ship, filled with what seem to be frozen, contorted corpses. But they are not dead. When one of them revives, Rodney must fend off one of the most bloodthirsty and black-hearted scoundrels ever to sail the seven seas! Russell was a sailor for several years before he turned to writing journalism and fiction. He wrote much on nautical topics and campaigned to improve working conditions for seamen. A little bit forgotten in this age, but in his day he was well known for the books “The Wreck of the Grosvenor” and for “The Death Ship, A Strange Story”.

Paul Rodney is the only survivor of a terrible storm which leaves his ship wrecked on huge Antarctic iceberg in the late 1800's. He slowly drifts south through the frozen vastness, seemingly sentenced to die alone. The mate eventually discovers an ancient pirate ship locked tight in the massive ice fields. Aboard the pirate ship, he discovers large stocks of food, drink, and coal... As well as numerous members of the pirate crew, all frozen solid. Building a fire to thaw the supplies, Rodney is astonished when one of the pirates revives, coming back to life. The old pirate, frozen for fifty years, begins to describe a treasure before slowly falling into madness, endangering Rodney's survival and escape back to civilization.
