The novel is set in the fictitious Midlands town of Middlemarch during 1829โ€“32, and it comprises several distinct (though intersecting) stories and a large cast of characters. Significant themes include the status of women, the nature of marriage, idealism, self-interest, religion, hypocrisy, political reform, and education.Although containing comical elements, Middlemarch is a work of realism that refers to many historical events: the 1832 Reform Act, the beginnings of the railways, the death of King George IV, and the succession of his brother, the Duke of Clarence (the future King William IV). In addition, the work incorporates contemporary medical science and examines the deeply reactionary mindset found within a settled community facing the prospect of unwelcome change.Eliot began writing the two pieces that would eventually form Middlemarch during the years 1869โ€“70 and completed the novel in 1871. Although the first reviews were mixed, it is now widely regarded as her best work and one of the greatest novels written in English.

    Hardcover (Barnes & Noble, Sept. 3, 1996)
It was George Eliot's ambition to create a world and portray a whole community--tradespeople, middle classes, country gentry--in the rising fictional provincial town of Middlemarch, circa 1830. Vast and crowded, rich in narrative irony and suspense, Middlemarch is richer still in character and in its sense of how individual destinies are shaped by and shape the community.

This ebook includes a biographical introduction, a short, critical analysis of Eliot's career and a brief introduction to this work. This ebook does not contain textual annotations.First published in 1972 in serial form by Blackwoods, Middlemarch was printed as a book in 1874. Set in and around the eponymous fictional town which is accepted to be based on Coventry, the novel traces the lives of its characters while providing a commentary on wider political and social events centred on the 1832 Reform Act.Two pivotal characters dominate the novel. On one side is Dorothea Brooke who mistakenly marries the older Edward Casaubon and on the other is Will Ladislaw, Casaubonโ€™s nephew and in some respects his antithesis. Around these pivots are a host of other major and minor characters that Eliot uses to explore her themes.Middlemarch has been widely accepted as the greatest realist novel in the English language and some, including Virginia Woolf and Martin Amis, have gone further. Given the many underlying themes, it is also a prime choice for literature courses.

    eBook (, Aug. 3, 2016)
"Middlemarch" by George Eliot, one of the masterpieces of English fiction, is set in the fictitious Midlands town of Middlemarch. It has multiple plots with a large cast of characters, and in addition to its distinct though interlocking narratives it pursues a number of underlying themes, including the status of women, the nature of marriage, idealism and self-interest, religion and hypocrisy, political reform, education, class climbing and sinking, love and marriage. Despite the fact that it has some comical characters, "Middlemarch" is a work of realism. Through the voices and opinions of different characters we become aware of various broad issues of the day: the Great Reform Bill, the beginnings of the railways, the death of King George IV and the succession of his brother, the Duke of Clarence (King William IV).

Young, ardent Dorothea Brooke defies her sister by wedding the much older Reverend Edward Casaubon, blindly hoping to assist in his scholarly pursuits. Tertius Lydgate, a progressive doctor, new and unwelcome in provincial Middlemarch, is charmed into marriage with the selfish and shallow Rosamond Vincy, a disastrous mismatch of his own. Soon blatant stubbornness, unruly jealousy, blind idealism, and calculated blackmail threaten to upend the Midlands village and lay waste to happy endings.Middlemarch, George Eliotโ€™s epic realist masterwork, encapsulates Victorian society on the edge of radical political, social, and industrial change. Originally published in eight volumes, it is regarded today as one of the greatest English novels of all time.Revised edition: Previously published as Middlemarch, this edition of Middlemarch (AmazonClassics Edition) includes editorial revisions.
