  • The Sea Fairies

    L. Frank Baum

Paperback (Bottom of the Hill Publishing, May 1, 2012)
The Sea Fairies, along with Sky Island, was intended to be parts of a long-running fantasy series to replace the Oz books. Trot is a little girl who lives on the coast of southern California. Her father is the captain of a sailing schooner, and her constant companion is Cap'n Bill Weedles, a retired sailor with a wooden leg. One day, Trot wishes that she could see a mermaid to her amazement the next day she does. The mermaids explain that they are benevolent fairies; when they offer Trot a chance to pay a visit to their land in mermaid form, Trot is enthusiastic, and Bill is too loyal to let her go off without him. Lyman Frank Baum was an American author of children's books, best known for writing The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. He wrote thirteen novel sequels, nine other fantasy novels, and other works.

  • The Sea Fairies

    L. Frank Baum, 1stworld Library

Hardcover (1st World Library - Literary Society, May 22, 2006)
Nobody, said Cap'n Bill solemnly, "ever sawr a mermaid an' lived to tell the tale." "Why not?" asked Trot, looking earnestly up into the old sailor's face. They were seated on a bench built around a giant acacia tree that grew just at the edge of the bluff. Below them rolled the blue waves of the great Pacific. A little way behind them was the house, a neat frame cottage painted white and surrounded by huge eucalyptus and pepper trees. Still farther behind that - a quarter of a mile distant but built upon a bend of the coast - was the village, overlooking a pretty bay.

Nesbit's Wet Magic (1913). Baum's novel has no relation to the 1830 poem of the same name by Alfred, Lord Tennyson. In 1905, however, a musical setting of Tennyson's poem for female chorus and orchestra, composed by Amy Beach, was in performance; the title may have stuck in the back of Baum's mind.

    L. Frank Baum

    Paperback (Aegypan, Nov. 1, 2007)
Note: this isn't generally considered an Oz book, and you'd be hard pressed to find a mention of Oz in these pages. But in later books Baum wrote characters from this and other books into his Oz titles -- which makes these Oz series books, after a fashion. "Nobody," said the old sailor solemnly, "ever sawr a mermaid an' lived to tell the tale!" * Little did Cap'n Bill realize his words would start him upon the greatest and most perilous adventure of his life -- along with the little sea-loving girl Mayre, whom he nicknamed Trot. In The Sea Fairies, the famous author of the Oz books takes us on an adventure to a fairyland -- one to be found deep below the rolling waves of the ocean!
