From the age of eleven until she was eighteen, Jane Austen wrote her tales in three notebooks. The notebooks still exist – one in the Bodleian Library; the other two in the British Museum. They include among others Love and Freindship, written when Jane was fourteen, and The History of England, when she was fifteen. Written in epistolary form, like her later unpublished novella, Lady Susan, Love and Freindship is thought to be one of the tales she wrote for the amusement of her family; it was dedicated to her cousin Eliza de Feuillide, "La Comtesse de Feuillide". The instalments, written as letters from the heroine Laura, to Marianne, the daughter of her friend Isabel, may have come about as nightly readings by the young Jane in the Austen home. Love and Freindship (the misspelling is one of many in the story) is clearly a parody of romantic novels Austen read as a child. This is clear even from the subtitle, "Deceived in Freindship and Betrayed in Love", which completely undercuts the title.

    Jane Austen

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, Feb. 9, 2018)
Although Jane Austen is best known for novels such as Pride and Prejudice that deal with romantic entanglements and class conflicts, she was also a skilled essayist and humor writer. In "Love and Freindship" (sic), Austen sends up the epistolary novels that were popular in her day, as well as skewering some of the satire-worthy ideas about love and marriage that were common in the era.

Love and Freindship is a juvenile story by Jane Austen, dated 1790, when Austen was 14 years old. Written in epistolary form, like her later unpublished novella, Lady Susan, it is likely one of the tales she wrote for the amusement of her family. The installments, written as letters from the heroine Laura, to Marianne, the daughter of her friend, Isabel, "La Comtesse de Feullide," may have come about as nightly readings by the young Jane in the Austen home. Love and Freindship (the misspelling is one of many in the story) is clearly a parody of romantic novels Austen read as a child. This is clear even from the subtitle, "Deceived in Freindship and Betrayed in Love," which totally undercuts the title. In form, it resembles a fairy tale as much as anything else, featuring wild coincidences and turns of fortune, but Austen is determined to lampoon the conventions of romantic stories, right down to the utter failure of romantic fainting spells, which always turn out badly for the female characters. In this story one can see the development of Austen's sharp wit and disdain for romantic sensibility, so characteristic of her later novels. She was educated primarily by her father and older brothers as well as through her own reading. The steadfast support of her family was critic

    MP3 CD (IDB Productions, July 6, 2014)
Love and Friendship is one of the early works of Jane Austen and presents the misfortunes of a young woman and her husband, who listened only to the voice of their hearts and married hastily, without having the consent of the groom's father. In telling the story of the two, who fell in love at first sight, deciding to face the disapproval of the young man's relatives, especially his father and aunt, who aspired to a much better union for him, the writer uses the epistolary style. The novel is a collection of letters, most of them written by Laura, the heroin, and addressed to Marianne, the daughter of her best friend, Isabel. The letter opening the book is from Isabel to Laura, the former asking the latter, now 55 years old, to share a bit of her life experience to her young daughter, Marianne, so that the latter may learn the valuable life lessons coming from the story the easy way, not the hard way, as Laura herself did.The heroin kindly accepts, so she begins to write to Marianne, describing for her the circumstances that led to her meeting her future husband, a very handsome young man named Edward Lindsay, and also telling about their hasty decision to marry after only a few days. In Edward's case, although it is implied that he also loved Laura very much, the decision was also motivated by his desire to defy his father, who planned to marry him with the rich Lady Dorothea. The young couple goes to London, living in the house of Augustus, a friend of Edward, who also disobeyed his family when he married Sophia, the woman he loved. Although, in the beginning, everything seems to be perfect, a series of tragic events turn the peaceful life of the two happy couples upside down.“Run mad as often as you choose, but do not faint!”

"DECEIVED in FRIENDSHIP and BETRAYED in LOVE." Jane Austen (16 December 1775 – 18 July 1817) was an English novelist whose works of romantic fiction, set among the landed gentry, earned her a place as one of the most widely read writers in English literature. Her realism, biting irony and social commentary have gained her historical importance among scholars and critics. How often, in answer to my repeated intreaties that you would give my Daughter a regular detail of the Misfortunes and Adventures of your Life, have you said "No, my freind never will I comply with your request till I may be no longer in Danger of again experiencing such dreadful ones." Surely that time is now at hand. You are this day 55. If a woman may ever be said to be in safety from the determined Perseverance of disagreeable Lovers and the cruel Persecutions of obstinate Fathers, surely it must be at such a time of Life: ISABEL

    Jane Austen

    eBook (, Dec. 14, 2017)
Begun when she was just eleven years old, Love and Friendship is one of Jane Austen's stories that very few readers may have encountered before.Austen experts feel that this story was written, like many others, only for the pleasure of her family and friends. It is scribbled across three notebooks, in childish handwriting, and the complete work is thought to have been written over a period of six or seven years. It is dedicated to one of her cousins, whom she was very close to, Eliza de Feuillide. Eliza herself was an extremely colorful figure and is thought to have been the illegitimate daughter of the first Governor General of India, Warren Hastings. She was also a witness to the French Revolution where her husband, the self styled Comte de Feuillide was guillotined. For the young Jane, these events must have been sheer inspiration to a writer's imagination. Love and Friendship takes the shape of an expostulatory novel. Written as a series of letters from Laura to a much younger Marianne who is her friend Isabel's daughter, it is meant to apprise the young and flighty Marianne about the dangers of infatuation and falling headlong into romantic love. The book offers an early and crucial insight into Jane Austen's style, her wonderful sense of humor and her take on contemporary society. At times, she portrays events almost in parody form, at others, she is sharp and critical, but as always, the typical Jane Austen brand of gentle, sparkling wit is highly evident. She describes the concept of “sensibility” or what we would today call “sensitivity” or “sentimentality” and how it can be taken to ridiculous extremes. The deliberately twisted and complicated plot is replete with fainting fits, deaths due to a variety of causes, including “galloping consumption,” plenty of drama, elopements galore, unbelievable coincidences and wicked philanderers—all the elements that a typical potboiler of the era would contain.Love and Friendship was written primarily for the amusement of her large and gregarious family, and young Jane was probably called upon to read her writings aloud. The reader can only imagine the sheer hilarity that the novel must have evoked. As part of a collection of Jane Austen Juvenilia, this is indeed a treasure trove for Jane Austen enthusiasts as it offers early glimpses of that brilliant talent which was to shine forth a few years later and delight readers of all ages.Begun when she was just eleven years old, Love and Friendship is one of Jane Austen's stories that very few readers may have encountered before.Austen experts feel that this story was written, like many others, only for the pleasure of her family and friends.
