  • A Study in Scarlet

Arthur Conan Doyle, George Hutchinson, D.H. Friston, ICU Publishing

eBook (ICU Publishing, Feb. 2, 2011)
A Study in Scarlet is a detective mystery novel written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, which was first published in 1887. It is the first story to feature the character of Sherlock Holmes, who would later become one of the most famous literary detective characters, with long-lasting interest and appeal. The book's title derives from a speech given by Holmes to his companion Doctor Watson on the nature of his work, in which he describes the story's murder investigation as his "study in scarlet": "There’s the scarlet thread of murder running through the colourless skein of life, and our duty is to unravel it, and isolate it, and expose every inch of it."Conan Doyle wrote the novel at the age of 27 in less than three weeks. As a general practice doctor in South Sea, Portsmouth, he had already published short stories in several magazines of the day, such as the periodical London Society. The story was originally titled A Tangled Skein, and was eventually published by Ward Lock & Co. in Beeton's Christmas Annual 1887, after many rejections. The author received £25 in return for the full rights (although Conan Doyle had pressed for a royalty instead). It was illustrated by D. H. Friston. The novel was first published as a book on July 1888 by Ward, Lock & Co., and featured drawings by the author's father, Charles Doyle. A second edition appeared the following year and was illustrated by George Hutchinson; a year later in 1890, J. B. Lippincott & Co. released the first American version. Numerous further editions, translations and dramatizations have appeared since. The story, and its main character, attracted little public interest when it first appeared. Only 11 complete copies of Beeton's Christmas Annual 1887 are known to exist now and they have considerable value. Although Conan Doyle wrote 56 short stories featuring Holmes, A Study in Scarlet is one of only four full-length novels in the original canon. The novel was followed by The Sign of Four, published in 1890. A Study in Scarlet was the first work of fiction to incorporate the magnifying glass as an investigative tool. The book includes original illustrations by D.H. Friston and George Hutchinson, active/navigable table of contents and free audiobok link for download (which can be downloaded using a PC/Mac) at the end of the book.

The story, originally titled A Tangled Skein, was first published in Mrs Beeton's 1887 Christmas Annual. This was the premiere of the famous character Sherlock Holmes upon the British public. The story is narrated by the character John H Watson as a reminiscence of the events surrounding his meeting with Mr Sherlock Holmes and the adventures that this friendship draws him into.Watson has been injured whilst serving as an army surgeon in India. Whilst recovering he was struck down with enteric fever and the impact upon his health has been severe, he has returned to England to convalesce. Watson leads a "comfortless, meaningless existence" until his financial situation prompts him to seek out less expensive lodgings. A chance meeting with an old acquaintance named Stamford affords Watson an introduction to another man seeking affordable rooms, a man called Sherlock Holmes.Stamford suggests that Watson talks to Holmes about the possibility of sharing lodgings but he warns that Holmes is somewhat eccentric and very devoted to his work in certain branches of science, particularly chemistry.Upon their meeting Sherlock Holmes astonishes Watson by correctly perceiving that he has recently been in Afghanistan and then enthusiastically demonstrates a method to test for the presence of blood stains, Holmes keenly explains the relevance of the method to criminal forensic science. The two men view rooms at 2 21B Baker Street the next day and agree to lodge together.Once ensconced in the new rooms Watson's boredom and the intriguingly mysterious actions of Sherlock Holmes drive the Doctor to note Holmes' habits and attempt to work out what the object of his intensive and varied studies could be.One morning Watson reads an article in a magazine which claims that by small observations of a person's expression, movement or appearance one can discern that person's trade, history and even thoughts. Watson states that he does not believe such a process to be practically possible.Sherlock Holmes calmly informs Watson that it was he who wrote the article. He reveals to Watson that he is a consulting detective, when the official and private forces of detection fail Holmes is engaged to try his hand. His knowledge of subjects as diverse and detailed as what kind of dirt adheres to one's shoes in various parts of London gives him the edge over the more official lines of investigation.
  • Sherlock Holmes: A Study in Scarlet

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Sidney Paget, George Hutchinson

eBook (AD Classic, Nov. 8, 2011)
A Study in Scarlet is the first story to feature Sherlock Holmes, and the first work of fiction to incorporate the magnifying glass as a detective tool. The story opens with Holmes and Watson meeting each other for the first time, and their decision to become flat-mates at 221B Baker Street. Soon they are involved in a murder-mystery involving kidnapping, enslavement and revenge that will test the limits of Holmes' skills and establish a life-long relationship with Watson. Sherlock Holmes is famous for his intellectual prowess and is renowned for his skilful use of deductive reasoning, astute observation, and forensic skills to solve difficult cases. Deductive reasoning allows Holmes to impressively reveal a stranger's occupation. Similarly, by studying inanimate objects, he is able to make astonishingly detailed deductions about their owners. This mindset was a major innovation in the field of crime fiction, inspiring authors like Robert J. Sawyer, Neil Gaiman and Stephen King.
