    Carlo Collodi, Susan O'Malley

Audio CD (Blackstone Audio, Inc., Dec. 1, 2009)
When the old woodcarver Geppetto decides to make a puppet boy to dance and turn summersaults, he doesn't know that he has chosen a magical piece of wood. To his amazement, his puppet can talk and play just like the liveliest child. But a human soul must be earned; and thus begin the adventures of Pinocchio. A tragicomic figure, Pinocchio is a poor, illiterate peasant boy with few choices in life who usually chooses to shirk his responsibilities and get into trouble. Pinocchio plays pranks on Geppetto, is duped by Fox and Cat, smashes the pedantic talking Cricket, and narrowly escapes death with the help of the blue-haired Fairy. But he is also brave, and as he stumbles from one predicament to the next, he makes his way unsteadily toward his heart's desire.

  • Pinocchio

    Carlo Collodi, Alice Carsey

    Paperback (Digireads.com, Jan. 1, 2012)
First published in 1883, this classic of children's literature is known worldwide as a story of a wooden puppet boy and his creator, Geppetto. Though this tale has undergone countless adaptations, the original story is surprisingly dark and dream-like, beginning with a talking piece of pine that refuses to become the leg of a table. When given to the small Italian village's poor woodcarver, the pine becomes a mischievous puppet boy named Pinocchio. All the wooden puppet dreams of is becoming a real boy, though he is very frequently distracted, first by marionettes, then by a fox and a cat, later by a snake, weasels, and the circus. Though he is aided by the Talking Cricket and the Turquoise Fairy, Pinocchio's adventures and trials take him down a long road that ultimately leads him to his first wish: becoming a real boy. As loveable as Huck Finn, Pinocchio is naughty, lucky, tragic, comedic, illiterate, and imaginative in this subversive work that is just as much satire as it is pure enchantment. This edition includes over forty illustrations by Alice Carsey.

    eBook (, Aug. 7, 2020)
This is the wonderful story of Pinocchio, the puppet who must learn many lessons before he can become a real boy. Carved by a woodcarver named Geppetto in a small Italian village, he dreamed of becoming a real boy but strays from the path of goodness many times and is very willing to listen to temptation. He has also been used as a character who is prone to telling lies and fabricating stories for various reasons. The story has appeared in many adaptations in other mediums. Pinocchio has been called an icon of modern culture, and one of most reimagined characters in the pantheon of children's literature. Listen to his many adventures, scrapes, misdeeds and pranks followed by bouts of sincere repentance and remorse. But these last only until the next enticing adventure or misdeed presents itself. Of course he does finally learn his lesson and does become a real boy when finally understanding that love and duty come first before pleasure and play.
