Katherine Mansfield, Cathy Dobson, Red Door Audiobooks

Audiobook (Red Door Audiobooks, April 13, 2013)
First published in 1911, Katherine Mansfield's collection In a German Pension was inspired by her extended stay in a spa town in Bavaria in 1909, during which she suffered a miscarriage. The collection brought her instant fame and popularity as a short story writer, particularly as her amusing - though less than favourable - caricatures of the Germans were very popular at that time. "Germans at Meat" "The Baron" "The Sister of the Baroness" "Frau Fischer" "Frau Brechenmacher Attends a Wedding" "The Modern Soul" "At Lehmann’s" "The Luft Bad" "A Birthday" "The Child-Who-Was-Tired" "The Advanced Lady" "The Swing of the Pendulum" "A Blaze"

Katherine Mansfield, Harrie Dobby, Bookstream Audiobooks

Audiobook (Bookstream Audiobooks, Nov. 25, 2019)
In a German Pension is a 1911 collection of short stories by the writer Katherine Mansfield; her first published collection. All but three of the stories were originally published in The New Age edited by A. R. Orage; the first to appear was "The Child-Who-Was-Tired". The last three were first published in this collection. The stories were written after her stay in Bad Wörishofen, a German spa town in 1909, where she was taken by her mother after her disastrous marriage, pregnancy and miscarriage. Some reflect the coarse habits and arrogance of Germans, and some refer to the exploitation and repression of women by men.

    Katherine Mansfield

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, Aug. 10, 2018)
In a German Pension: Large Print By Katherine Mansfield Katherine Mansfield, born Kathleen Mansfield Murray is best known as a prominent author born in New Zealand. She was part of a 'new dawn' in English literature alongside Elliot, Joyce and Woolf. Her writing style was unconventional in the sense that her stories do not follow the 'norm' set by earlier writers. Her plots tend to concentrate on a moment, a situation or a particular crisis. She uses her characters and mood to weave her tales, in a way that the plot itself becomes secondary. Many of her thoughts and some of her writing features the thoughts and ideas of Chekhov, the Russian playwright she admired so much. The clever use of suggestion and implication tend to replace outright detail. This, and the sense ( and use ) of paradox mark her out as someone special, a 'Princess' in the royalty of English literature. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. • In a German Pension

    Katherine Mansfield

eBook (SAGA Egmont, Jan. 4, 2017)
Recovering from a miscarriage and a bad marriage, author Katherine Mansfield, barely 21, wrote these excellent short stories around the time she was staying in a spa town in Germany. With wry humour, she depicts a German upper middle class defined by their rude habits, but she also touches upon the hard life of servants and the oppression of women. The latter distinguishes her writing from that of Jane Austen, but the way in which Mansfield mocks the stiff-upper-lipped ladies and Barons of these stories and zeroes in on character quirks is particularly Jane Austen-like, and just as satisfying as in `Pride and Prejudice‘.
