It all began one "golden afternoon" in Oxford, in July 1862, when three young Liddell sisters set out on a boating trip, accompanied by the Reverends Robinson, Duckworth, and Charles Lutwidge Dodgson. To keep the children amused, Dodgson, a diffident young math tutor, began to tell a tale about an inquisitive youngster, Alice, and her escapades in an underground world. Dodgson spun out the "interminable fairy-tale" until Alice Liddell—the heroine of the tale—implored him to write it down, and two years later, on November 26, 1864, he sent Alice an early "Christmas gift for a dear child." In this superb facsimile of Dodgson's manuscript—now one of the British Library's most treasured possessions—modern readers can enjoy the expressive script and vibrant illustrations of the original. In an accompanying commentary, Sally Brown sketches a portrayal of Dodgson, and traces the stages through which the story passed as it was revised, expanded, illustrated by the Punch cartoonist John Tenniel, and finally published as Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, under the celebrated pen-name Lewis Carroll.

In 1864, Lewis Carroll sent Alice's Adventures Under Ground, a handwritten and illustrated manuscript, as a gift to Alice Liddell, the daughter of his Oxford dean. This formed the basis for Carroll's Alice in Wonderland – introducing timeless characters such as Alice, the White Rabbit, the Queen of Hearts and the Gryphon – although it differs considerably from the later work, with the author himself approving its publication in 1886. Alice's Adventures under Ground was the little-known first draft of what became the famed Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. When Charles Dodgson, better-known as Lewis Carroll, first composed the story of Alice, it was on a boating trip with the Liddell sisters. It was for Alice Liddell that he told tales of Alice's adventures, and Dodgson eventually promised to write the stories down for her. This edition of Alice's Adventures under Ground is the second recorded version of Alice's tales (the first was destroyed), given as a gift to Miss Liddell for Christmas. Afterward, friends encouraged Dodgson to publish Alice's Adventures, which he did after some revisions with Macmillan & Company in London, as the version we know and love today. This facsimile of the handwritten 1864 manuscript includes additional material from the 1886 version and 37 original illustrations. He was noted for his facility at word play, logic, and fantasy. The poems Jabberwocky and The Hunting of the Snark are classified in the genre of literary nonsense. He was also a mathematician, photographer, and Anglican deacon.Carroll came from a family of high-church Anglicans, and developed a long relationship with Christ Church, Oxford, where he lived for most of his life as a scholar and teacher. Alice Liddell, daughter of the Dean of Christ Church, Henry Liddell, is widely identified as the original for Alice in Wonderland, though Carroll always denied this.Dodgson's family was predominantly northern English (with Irish connections), conservative and high-church Anglican. Most of Dodgson's male ancestors were army officers or Church of England clergy. His great-grandfather, also named Charles Dodgson, had risen through the ranks of the church to become the Bishop of Elphin.[1] His paternal grandfather, another Charles, had been an army captain, killed in action in Ireland in 1803 when his two sons were hardly more than babies.[2] The older of these sons – yet another Charles Dodgson – was Carroll's father. He was mathematically gifted and won a double first degree, which could have been the prelude to a brilliant academic career. Instead, he married his first cousin Frances Jane Lutwidge in 1830 and became a country parson. Dodgson was born in the small parsonage at Daresbury in Cheshire near the towns of Warrington and Runcorn the eldest boy and the third child. Eight more children followed. When Charles was 11, his father was given the living of Croft-on-Tees in the North Riding of Yorkshire, and the whole family moved to the spacious rectory. This remained their home for the next 25 years.Charles's father was an active and highly conservative cleric of the Church of England who later became the Archdeacon of Richmond[6] and involved himself, sometimes influentially, in the intense religious disputes that were dividing the church. He was high church, inclining toward Anglo-Catholicism, an admirer of John Henry Newman and the Tractarian movement, and did his best to instil such views in his children. Young Charles was to develop an ambiguous relationship with his father's values and with the Church of England as a whole.From a young age, Dodgson wrote poetry and short stories, contributing heavily to the family magazine Mischmasch and later sending them to various magazines, enjoying moderate success. Between 1854 and 1856, his work appeared in the national publications The Comic Timesand The Train, as well as smaller magazines such as the Whitby Gazette and the Oxford Critic. Most of this output was humorous, sometimes satirical, but his standards and ambitions were exacting.
