This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.
  • The Naval War of 1812

    Theodore Roosevelt

    (IDB Productions, July 6, 2016)
The Naval War of 1812 is the first book published by Theodore Roosevelt, written at the age of 23 when he was still a college student. Covering the military conflict between the United States of America and the United Kingdom, the book was highly appreciated by historians and the general public as well and it is considered seminal work about the history of the War of 1812.Roosevelt not only describes the armed conflict and its landmark events, but he also discusses the political and the socio-economic climate that brought about the outbreak of the war. In Roosevelt’s view, the U.S. was not sufficiently prepared to enter a war of this magnitude and blames President Thomas Jefferson for the condition of the army. He goes on to provide a detailed and very accurate account of the events of the war on all the waters that served as battlefields, including both sides of the Atlantic Ocean and the lakes in America. He also analyses the opponent parties in terms of strengths and weaknesses, he evaluates the decisions made by the commanders of both armies as well as the performance of the armies and he manages to stay objective all the time, praising both parties when they deserve praising.Theodore Roosevelt’s account of the Naval War of 1812 is excellently written and very dense, so be prepared that the book is no quick and easy afternoon read. Whatever detail is mentioned in the book, it is backed up with reliable sources such as ship logs, statistics and technical documents and this extraordinary accuracy is paired with well-founded conclusions – a combination that makes The Naval War of 1812 is a book that had a huge impact on the way the war is today viewed by historians and has also contributed to the formation of the modern U.S. Navy.

    Theodore Roosevelt

    (Lulu.com, Aug. 28, 2018)
This edition of Theodore Roosevelt's thorough and detailed work on the naval engagements in the War of 1812 includes all of his original tables, lists, diagrams, appendices and notes. As the future President's first book, The Naval War of 1812 shines as a fine example of military history. Commonly overlooked by historians to this day, the 1812 war's naval engagements form a seldom discussed history. Owing to Theodore Roosevelt's accessible style of writing, what might otherwise be a dry or ponderous subject is made exciting, enlightening and accessible. Published in 1882, two years after Theodore Roosevelt had graduated from Harvard University, this book is the result of its author seeking a challenge for his intellect and research capacities. Combing archives for British and American documents, Roosevelt strove for neutrality, presenting the facts and outcomes of each battle with the impartiality of a professional historian.

    (, Feb. 21, 2020)
The Naval War of 1812 is Theodore Roosevelt's first book, published in 1882. It covers the naval battles and technology used during the War of 1812. It is considered a seminal work in its field, and had a massive impact on the formation of the modern American Navy.Theodore Roosevelt graduated from Harvard University in 1880, and was soon after married to Alice Hathaway Lee Roosevelt. While attending Columbia Law School and living in Manhattan, Roosevelt began completing research on a book he had started while still at Harvard. He had already completed two chapters of the book, and had finished it by December 1881. Roosevelt set out to write about a subject that both technically and historically challenged him. He decided on chronicling the naval battles between the British and American navies during the War of 1812. He tried to analyze the facts as unbiased as possible, looking at both American and British documents from the period, as well as some others from Continental Europe.
