  • The Old Man in the Corner

    Baroness Emmuska Orczy

    MP3 CD (IDB Productions, Jan. 1, 2016)
Baroness Emma Orczy was one of the most well-known and skilled authors of mystery literature of the late 1800s and early 20th century. Her unique position as a writer, playwright and artist of noble origin placed her at the heart of European politics at the time, and gave her remarkable insight into the high society of the Victorian and Edwardian eras. Her stories and novels were, therefore, quite original in their ability to capture this mysterious world in its many intricacies. As the second story collection she had written, as well as one of her best, The Old Man in the Corner comprises many of the Baroness' most masterfully written gems – tales recounted by the Baroness' unusual creation, a keen eyed, intelligent detective who confides his own conclusions to the young female journalist he finds himself with in a London restaurant. The stories themselves are each more interesting than the one before, constructed to amaze and fascinate the reader, but also to be as thought-provoking as possible. Each containing a strange and addictive puzzle that will catch your eye from the start, they are designed to ease into the mystery at a steady pace, while only revealing as much as necessary to keep the story going at any given time.Even modern readers often find it difficult to solve the Baroness' surprisingly complex and quite timeless puzzles. All of the stories include mysterious and quite fascinating circumstances that will take you by surprise. Also, the detective's sharp mind and strongability to point out and explain his arguments will undoubtedly remind you of characters such as Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes.

  • The Old Man in the Corner

    Baroness Orczy

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, Feb. 5, 2013)
Created by Baroness Orczy, author of the famous Scarlet Pimpernel series, The Old Man In the Corner was one of the earliest armchair detectives, popping up with so many others in the wake of the huge popularity of the Sherlock Holmes stories. The Old Man In the Corner is one of three books of short stories featuring Orczy's armchair detective (dramatically revealed as Bill Owen in final story of this book). Although it contains the earliest written and published stories in the series, this book was not published until 1909, four years after The Case of Miss Elliott. The last book in the series is Unravelled Knots. The Old Man relies mostly upon sensationalistic "penny dreadful" newspaper accounts, with the occasional courtroom visit. He narrates all this information, while tying complicated knots in a piece of string, to a female Journalist who frequents the same tea-shop (the A.B.C. Teashop on the corner of Norfolk Street and the Strand). They enjoy an antagonistic relationship, as the Journalist attempts to cut the Old Man's ego down to size and the Old Man trumps her every time. The mysteries themselves are typical of Edwardian crime fiction, resting on a solid foundation of unhappy marriages and the inequitable division of family property. Other aspects of the time are illustrated by a murder in the London underground system; murder of a female doctor; and two cases involving artists living in "bohemian" lodgings. Another new and noteworthy feature of these cases: no one is ever brought to justice, and in fact most of the villains cannot be proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

The man in the corner pushed aside his glass, and leant across the table. "Mysteries!" he commented. "There is no such thing as a mystery in connection with any crime, provided intelligence is brought to bear upon its investigation." Very much astonished Polly Burton looked over the top of her newspaper, and fixed a pair of very severe, coldly inquiring brown eyes upon him. She had disapproved of the man from the instant when he shuffled across the shop and sat down opposite to her, at the same marble-topped table which already held her large coffee (3d.), her roll and butter (2d.), and plate of tongue (6d.).
