In Return of the Unicorn, Gilbert Cross completes the story begun in Dragon Fire. It is the end of days in the World of Faerie. The Age of Men is dawning. The Elvin King, Ereborn, lies dying from a poisonous spear thrust, and without his leadership, the faerie folk cannot pass on to the Land in the West. The only hope of a cure is the magical Cauldron of Life, which cures all wounds, but it has not been seen for many years. The White Wizard, Zugjans, has discovered an ancient prophecy declaring the cauldron can only be found if a mortal youth leads the search. He sends the unicorn, Marshaum, to bring Bryan Godfrey from the World of Men to join the faeries already engaged in the search. Zugjans’ son, Frahñnon, leads the company which consists of a proud princess, a warrior poet, a boastful knight, and a gnorwus with a short temper. They thought the magical cauldron lay in the greedy hands of Huzdraka the Dragon, but it did not. The companions resolve to continue their search as they travel through unforgiving countryside filled with dangerous creatures to Ereborn’s faerie fort. As their journey progresses, they are faced with more perils than before. While assisting his elvish companions, Bryan realizes he is caught between parallel universes. There is his own world where he lies bed-ridden and dying, the land of elves, and the medieval kingdom of King Arthur. As if seeking the Magic Cauldron were not enough, Bryan is forced to help the irascible Sir Bors de Ganis search for the Holy Grail, the cup Jesus used at the Last Supper. Both these relics are of supreme importance to those who seek them, and, somehow, Bryan is expected to find them by displaying skills he never claimed to possess.
