In this sequel to "On All Hallows' Eve" Meg (now in eighth grade) and her sister, Sue (now in seventh) embark on a life-and-death adventure on two planes: that of the everyday waking world, and that of some deep dream level linked to it in a mysterious and frightening way. Christmas Eve, and Meg is having nightmares of being drawn closer each night to a menacing dark hole. The night she reachest it, a hand reaches through the hole and a boy cries for help. At first, she tries to stay awake, reluctant to put herself in danger. When her conscience kicks in and she decides to try to help the boy, Sue provides a novel way for her to do it. As a result, Meg meets her idol, Morgan le Fay, along with a crusty old mariner named Peter Saltifer. She acquires a virtual flying ship called Lady Buscarle, and makes for herself a virtual refuge: a small terrace garden in Tintagel Castle in Cornwall, England. Meanwhile, on the waking level, the boy - Gavin - is lying in a coma. Meg steals in to the hospital to see him, and learning that he hasn't long to live, redoubles her efforts to save him....
