Karna is a long-time advocate for those who are less fortunate. While working with homeless persons in Mason County, Washington, she realized some parents need to understand the importance of getting their children ready for school. With the help of Roy Crowe and Dean Peck (who assisted with developing the Sound Track available on Youtube), she has created this book for parents to read to their children on how to get ready for school. The book also teaches children to help one another when they may need it-rather than de-mean them. They can learn the value of being an ā€˜angelā€™. • My First Day of School

    Marni Altaker-Mount, AmyBeth Quering

Hardcover (Trafford Publishing, Jan. 24, 2006)
Marni Altaker-Mount's My First Day of School is a great starter book for any child experiencing school for the first time. Marni Altaker-Mount wrote this book while pursuing her undergraduate degree in Elementary Education. After successfully completing her undergraduate studies, completing a Masters of Education, and teaching for eight years she realized there was a need to publish her book for both classroom and home use to help children cope with their first school experience. Through the use of vivid color illustrations by AmyBeth Quering, this book is not only verbally stimulating but also visually entertaining. My First Day of Schoolhas easy text for read-alouds with early reader attention to numbers and letters. This book is a great tool for early education. The theme, of course, is the first day of school. A usual view would be from a child's perspective; this book is from a teacher's perspective. The reader does not find this out until the end of the book, but it clearly shows the teacher and the children share the same routines and apprehensions about the first day of school. This is quite a lovely and educational book, which will reach children, parents, and teachers. This book will also be a useful motivational tool for children with a fear of their first day in a classroom setting.
  • My First Day of School

    Nancy J. Skaermas

    Hardcover (WorthyKids, Jan. 30, 2000)
A picture book that takes the intimidating prospect of starting school and transforms it into an appealing adventure. The more five-year-old Daniel hears about kindergarten, the more he wants nothing to do with it. His preschool days are filled with swimming lessons, library time, and fun with Grandma, Mom, and his baby sister -- just the way he likes it. As the big first day approaches, Daniel, full of jitters, meets the excitement of the adults around him with skepticism. Vivid, playful illustrations help propel the reader along as each of Daniel's fears is overcome. With good-natured humor and sympathy, this entertaining book allays this oh-so-common fear of change. Ages 4-6.
