  • Moran of the Lady Letty

    Frank Norris

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, July 27, 2015)
This is to be a story of a battle, at least one murder, and several sudden deaths. For that reason it begins with a pink tea and among the mingled odors of many delicate perfumes and the hale, frank smell of Caroline Testout roses. There had been a great number of debutantes "coming out" that season in San Francisco by means of afternoon teas, pink, lavender, and otherwise. This particular tea was intended to celebrate the fact that Josie Herrick had arrived at that time of her life when she was to wear her hair high and her gowns long, and to have a "day" of her own quite distinct from that of her mother.

Wilbur had imagined that the combat would be hardly greater than a wild rush down the slope of the seashore, a sprint over the beach- combers' breastworks of sand, and a quick hand-to-hand scrimmage around the antique cabin. In all accounts he had ever read of such affairs, and in all thoughts he had entertained at the situation, this had usually been the case. The our bodies had greatly surprised together like a university rush, there have been 5 mins' play of knife and club and gun, a harassed whirl of dust and smoke, and all changed into over before one had time either to suppose or be afraid. But nothing of the kind befell that morning.
