From the Earth to the Moon (French: De la terre à la lune) is an 1865 novel by Jules Verne. It tells the story of the Baltimore Gun Club, a post-American Civil War society of weapons aficionados, and their attempts to build an enormous sky-facing Columbiad space gun and launch three people — the Gun Club's president, his Philadelphian armor-making rival, and a French poet — in a projectile with the goal of a moon landing. The story is also notable in that Verne attempted to do some rough calculations as to the requirements for the cannon and, considering the comparative lack of any data on the subject at the time, some of his figures are surprisingly close to reality. However, his scenario turned out to be impractical for safe manned space travel since a much longer muzzle would have been required to reach escape velocity while limiting acceleration to survivable limits for the passengers. The character of Michel Ardan, the French poet in the novel, was inspired by the real-life photographer Félix Nadar.

In the late twentieth century, Admiral Julian 3rd can get no rest, for he knows his future. He will be reborn as his grandson in the next century to journey through space and make an ominous discovery inside the moon; he will live again in the dark years of the twenty-second century as Julian 9th, who refuses to bow down to the victorious Moon Men; and as Julian 20th, the fierce Red Hawk, he will lead humanity's final battle against the alien invaders in the twenty-fifth century. The Moon Maid is Edgar Rice Burroughs's stunning epic of a world conquered by alien invaders from the moon and of the hero Julian, who champions the earth's struggle for freedom, peace, and dignity. • From The Earth to the Moon

    Jules Verne, Jim Killavey

MP3 CD (The Classic Collection, Oct. 18, 2016)
The American Civil War had ended, and the members of the American Gun Club tried to think of something else to interest them. At last they came up with the extraordinary idea of building the greatest cannon the world had ever seen and using it to launch a man-made "bullet" to the moon! When From the Earth to the Moon was published in 1865, it was regarded as pure fantasy. Who could imagine a rocket that would carry men and animals through space? Today, like so many of Jules Verne's prophecies, space travel is a reality.

  • From the Earth to the Moon

Jules Verne, Lewis Page Mercier, Eleanor E. King

eBook (Heritage Illustrated Publishing, March 8, 2014)
One of the great early works of science fiction, From the Earth to the Moon tells the incredible fictional story of a nineteenth century project to construct an enormous gun in Florida that would fire a manned projectile to the moon. Despite the minimal data available at the time it was written, some of Jules Verne's calculations for the story were remarkably accurate. The manned projectile is considered one of the earliest fictional spaceships to have been at the heart of a science fiction novel. Just as gripping today as it would have been when published all those years ago, the tale remains a sci-fi classic and is still widely read around the world. This meticulous digital edition from Heritage Illustrated Publishing is a faithful reproduction of the original text and includes the sequel 'And Round the Moon'. It's beautifully illustrated with a number of delightful sketches that accompanied early editions of the novel.
  • From the Earth to the Moon

Jules Verne, Lewis Page Mercier, Eleanor E. King

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, Feb. 9, 2018)
Nearly a century before NASA, a visionary novelist wrote this adventure classic about an international space race. Jules Verne's eerily prophetic fantasy unfolds at the close of the American Civil War, as three artillerymen resolve to build a gun big enough to propel a manned rocket to the moon. Enlivened by broad satire, this rollicking tale recounts the launch of three astronauts from a Florida peninsula and their return to Earth in a splash landing.

From the Earth to the Moon is a humorous science fantasy novel by Jules Verne and is one of the earliest entries in that genre. It tells the story of the president of a post-American Civil War gun club in Baltimore, his rival, a Philadelphia maker of armor, and a Frenchman, who build an enormous sky-facing Columbiad space gun and launch themselves in a projectile/spaceship from it to a Moon landing.
